Apart from anything else, the world is going to think we're insane - picture the moment when all those overseas visitors get to their hotel room and start flipping channels - "There's rugby on EVERY CHANNEL! These Kiwis need to get out more."

Discussion on teh wireless this morning with Dave Walden (sp?) Advertising guru saying it's going to be hard selling advertising because the audience size is going to be very difficult to predict without exclusivity of broadcast.
My heart is bleeding for the media buyers. Will nobody think of them?

In the Taranaki dairy town of Eltham, 50 lonely protestors were showered with eggs and bottles...
It'll all have been worth it when the John Minto Boulevard of Dreams is opened.
-
...but not the place to be for an after match function.
...once again wasn't that kind of business supposed to be falling to the places that already exist - rather than the Gummint monopolising that too?
When does the little bloke get a look in, or are they getting screwed twice - taxes spent on Rugger & Telly coverage and no trickle down benefit.... -

does it terminate at a Reds Quad?
(a piazza parlous indeed...) -

for holding a piss-up in winter on a windswept wharf

Reds Quad
Blue hoo hoo.
Beat Me!! Beat Me!
Move Move!
Beat Me Beat Me!
Move Move! The name of the beer dispensing station in the tent will be the Minto Bar
-
And it'll sell minto juleps on the side.

Isn't the pointless 3rd/4th place play-off one of the games shown on all channels?
Ah good so the final AB's games will be free to air then? :o)

While the name "Party Central" should be taken out and shot, I still think an opened Queens Wharf with temporary structures could be great.
Put in a modern marquee -- sides up if the weather's good, down if it's not. Book bands and other acts to play. Show classic rugby games. Put on kids' shows featuring players from the tournament. Foster the general sense of event about the country. You could host food and drink providers, or just leave that part to actual bars and restaurants. Whatever.
When you look at what the Music/Movies in Parks people are doing on very modest budgets this summer in Auckland, it's really not hard to imagine what could be done for this once-only event.
Unfortunately, the people driving this don't really have that sort of imagination.

The people driving it have still got the pip at getting a unified "fuck off" from the region's mayors. An event that, I suspect, was so far outside the realms of their imagination that they'll remain in shock for a while yet.

On a totally unrelated note, but figuring that PAS is as good a place as any to ask, does anyone out there have a handle on bodies that will give out large (six-figure, preferably in the 200-500k range) grants to Auckland-based community theatre groups? I've got Lotteries, ASB Trust, and Sky City. Have also delved into Lions and the local Community Board. Am I missing any obvious candidates? I'm trying to demonstrate the futility of expecting to fund $600-800,000 from donations and grants.

is it a really BIG stand alone theatre ? - Alan Gibbs?
or just get everyone in Auckland to give $1?
or if it was for The Mercury - well the Waihi Gold mine should support anything to do with Mercury... (assay , assay, assay... I just flew in from the Coromandel, boy are my arms tired!)
Telecom might be looking for a goodwill gesture? -
Distant memory it was only 1 million people
No wonder we lost. The players can sense not having all of NZ behind them, you know. Like how sharks can smell fear.

I'd suggest a *lot* of ANZers have given up on rugby: in my whanau,
basketball, gymnastics, ice-skating (ok, that's the Winter Olympics for you!) and motorsports have overtaken it -insofar as tv coverage is concerned.I've never watched a complete game of rugby in my life: I certainly wont be doing so next year. I note that almost none of the 1st & 2nd generation (from me) either play or are interested in it.
Bad move, rugby controlling board, removing or reducing support for provincial clubs & games...

I can see I'll be walking the dog down to the video shop regularly.
And abusing my bandwidth cap - legally mostly - its amazing how many episodes of Pinky And The Brain are on YouTube. -
Support for the Springbok tour was particularly strong in rural and small-town New Zealand. In the Taranaki dairy town of Eltham, 50 lonely protestors were showered with eggs and bottles as they marched up the street one Friday night.
Good on them - I know how they felt - sneaking into Invercargil in the back of unmarked trucks having driven around until the worst of the locals had gone into the games was unnerving - so was marching down the main street of Dunedin on that last day when some mysterious someone had turned off the local TV transmitter .... there were a lot of angry people coming out of pubs .... few were sober ....
And the whole world WAS watching that day in Hamilton.
I do like the idea of poking a stick in the eye of the powers that be by naming something after John Minto ....
-
It's a shame the Super City won't be going all the way to North Cape. Then a road or street somewhere up there could be named after John Minto.
THAT should guarantee sending Ross Meurant into an apoplectic fit!

Don't know what size payouts the various gaming trusts stretch to. Probably helps if your theatre group has the phrase "racing club" in its name.

for holding a piss-up in winter on a windswept wharfThat made me laugh, (out loud) till I remembered the people upstairs and then Mr Reasonable bought me back to earth, gently, naturally.
No offence 'n all.
Just hope the fans get out and enjoy and no aggro.
(I should add of course 'cept on the field I guess that's what its all about)Wear a warm jacket, when that sun goes down it gets cold.
Attire....... Im a tragic.
