Guy Williams is on the money here...
What's interesting is that it hasn't raised the question of New Zealand becoming a republic. What's the point of changing the flag to sever colonial ties without actually severing colonial ties? Changing the cosmetic face of the country for no good reason makes us look like a finance company that's run into difficulties. Which, judging by asset sales, maybe we kind of are?

Despite the comments from the bench, both Henderson and Hide are far from conceding. The pair advanced opinions to the Herald that some of their arguments were so powerful it was not necessary for a mere associate judge to talk about them.
Zing! Kudos to Matt for such an insightful explanation. The main point I take is that you really don't want Hide as a supporter.

Or any of his friends or associates it seems. The Mountain Scene has a weird little story about Hendo seeking a restraining order against Grahame Thorne, ex AllBlack and MP. The judge told both parties that they were acting like "13-year-old schoolgirls" and Thorne was eventually forced to handwrite the following message.
I, Grahame Thorne, hereby unreservedly apologise to David Henderson for creating the email address prick.henderson @vodafone.com and for sending emails from that address and for any distress caused.
'If in doubt, sue someone' seems to be a hallmark for Hendo. Lord knows what caused that stoush, but neither party comes out looking particularly mature.

Which is why we give the highest honour to an All Black, pay tribute to any person helping the National Party agenda, and dismiss people with academic status on record. Hell, we basically even write January off in the news unless it involves the weather or road deaths

Yes it's interesting how "prominent New Zealander" has now come to mean something quite different from what it means on face value.
All we need now is for someone to start a wikipedia page of "Prominent New Zealanders" ....
Mind you in this case the judge calling them 13yr old girls is probably unfair to 13-yr old girls.
Otago seems to have become a bit of a hotbed for this sort of SLAPP suit intended to silence an opponent - Dunedin's mayor was forced to apologise and pay court costs after suggesting that financial mismanagement might have something to do with the various ORFU near bankruptcies that left his council millions of dollars in the hole.

Especially when it’s being used as a euphemism for bitches. One is expected to understand that the sexism evident in this instance was not intended to insult or offend a woman.

well that was part of what I was trying to say, but also I think we simply expect more from adults, which is really what the judge was likely trying to say ... but they are “Prominent New Zealanders” so I guess expectations start low

An OIA request following by a complaint to the Ombudsman by NoRightTurn has forced the PM's hand. He's finally agreed to release texts (or is that text singular?) between Glucina to himself at the time she used her Herald column to further victimise the waitress in the ponytail affair.
The Herald story does refer to "a text message" from Glucina. Or could that be just a sneaky method to get around the pesky problem of the Ombudsman?

Glucina's current employer TV3 has beaten the Ombudsman and released what they claim to be "the text". And it's pretty basic.
'just interviewed the waitress. Piece of work! Massive political agenda'.
Really? Were there no texts leading up to that point? Does Key usually ignore people who think they're doing him massive political favours by performing a hit on Key's victim? Sorry, but I find that hard to believe.

It wasn’t necessarily a text message if there was anything. I/S’s request, at least, requested all communications, but I guess a critical point here is this specific text message is the only instance of communication that anyone had any evidence of (isn’t it, based on something Glucina said?) so it would have looked mighty suspicious of the PM had denied it.
Requesting call records with Glucina’s number from the Prime Minister’s phone could be telling, but if they existed they’re probably not stored in any competently kept independent record keeping process and would be long deleted by now, given how this machine seems to work, since leaving evidence that it happened would be inconsistent with the current response if it were ever discovered.

Danyl has an interesting post over at the Dimpost. It involves a sudden surge of foul-mouthed commenters abusing Key on an RNZ page, which led to a subsequent demonising of "the loony left" by Whaleshit.
Given the relatively low number of commenters on any RNZ story, this does exude the whiff of an organised campaign. I wonder who would stoop low enough to use these sort of dirty tactics?

I borrowed this old envelope off Bill English so sorry, he may not be able to work out the budget this year, what with the drop in mail volume and NZ Post's poor performance, old envelopes are getting hard to find...
These vile 'commenters' strike me as the provocateur types who wear the V for Vendetta Guy Fawkes masks and like to break windows and property and turn demonstrations into confrontations - no political intent, just personal jollies, IMHO.

That video also has 792 shares as of right now. Share it to certain places and there’s a reasonable chance it’ll go viral amongst people who might comment with extreme views.
I agree with Danyl’s suggestion, though, that some of the most vile comments seem to have been made with manufactured accounts. (This doesn't automatically mean it's a setup by Slater et al.) It’s hard to know now, because the worst have been deleted by moderators.

Not in Ilam, where hell has long since frozen over. Brownlee conspicuously hasn't bothered to turn up at the ritual meet the candidates event for the past couple of elections at least. Like the current flag, which he's pretty much tacitly endorsed by his silence re. the tea towel, he seems to plan on being around for a while yet.

That meeting may be quite interesting. There’s a minor scandal brewing involving Bill English’s heir apparent, child politician and former tobacco lobbyist Todd Barclay. His electorate secretaries in Queenstown and Gore both resigned within days of each other, followed quickly by the chairman of the Clutha-Southland electorate.
While Nat HQ was trotting out the “nothing to see here” line citing “employment issues”, Barclay released the former Queenstown-staffer’s resignation letter to the media. As soon as he had apologised for that snafu, allegations emerged that Barclay had also made secret recordings of his staff.
One suspects that he may have taken the Nats’ mass surveillance plans too literally.

I’m sure we all remember the last election and the National Party running those rowing backwards TVCs using what appeared to be a plagiarised version of Enimen’s Lose Yourself. That incident was especially memorable for Steven Joyce’s comment that he thought the National Party's copyright infringement was “pretty legal”.
Lawyers for the Nats have requested that the trial be into two parts – one for liability and one for damages. If they use the same logic applied to the flag referendum they’ll probably want to work out the damages first, then have another trial to determine guilt.
The parties have been told to sort that business out by March 23.

Despite the denials from Key and English, things aren't going well for Todd Barclay. Police are speaking to both of his recently resigned electorate secretaries about the "secret recordings" at the centre of these disputes.

Mr Barclay previously worked as corporate affairs manager at tobacco giant Phillip Morris and worked in National Government ministerial offices.Personally I'd rather MPs negotiated their 'steep learning curves' prior to taking office - and what exactly did he learn at the tobacco company and 'ministerial offices' that left him so bereft of common-sense.
