Isnt it funny how the young turks become the old boys.
I've noted this point before. maybe thats part of growing up. you lose your idealism and drive to rebel.
I was trying to think of some people who were notable young turks and had become part of the establishment while maintaining their indie cred.
I've got a lot of time for Mike Chunn, and Chris Knox on that level, although the double j and twice the t connection took a little shine off it for me. Knox's movie reviews still convey his charting his own course thing.
any others?

Indie cred ??? fuck indie cred, i got indie cred coming out my arse but i cant eat that shit...sooner or later it just becomes all about the money and protecting your claim to it. Your drive to rebel ends up as the lone voice in the wilderness.
Maybe it's inevitable one sells out or be ostracised, excommunicated, blacklisted, maybe not.
I'm sure BS may have had grand plans on reforming the system as a young turk and to an extent he has but maybe the reforms weren't sweeping enough or his vision lacked real scope.
Maybe the lure of the darkside old boy ways is to strong. I'm hoping change of gov't = change of policy direction and personell.
If the alternative is to spend 6 yrs or so clawing my way up thorugh party ranks to get a list seat and enter parliament. Then so be it. Cos basically it's my money NZoA are playing with and those brureaucrats looking to run agencies as fiefdoms need reminding they are in my public service.
I got time and patience but it aint unlimited.

Indie cred ??? fuck indie cred,
maybe you're taking indie cred to mean indie rock cred, I meant it like your young turks phrase. ie not making life easy for yourself.
if you going to set up a system that only looks after your interests then expect to be fucked over by it when someone else pushes it to favour them.

I have absolutely no indie rock cred. I was talking more hiphop street cred. Keeping it real :)
-
young turk cred then, in a non genre defined way

I haven't commented on this thread, but I do have something to say; thank god we don't have Triple J in NZ. There are good Australian bands, but they don't get local exposure - properly local rather than nationwide. To get on the radio in a small or medium size city, you have to make it nationwide. Compare this to the b-Net. This means that bands aren't getting the feedback on their music they need, and persist on playing shit music. I certainly hope the b-net's role as in fostering new music persists.

isn't the radio in australia multi tiered?
I was in melbourne last week and had radio their explained to me although I didn't catch it all.
I visited pbs thinking it was like community radio but their studio and facilities were pretty big. They had a roister of specialists shows which covered many bases. I was quite impressed but I don't know how many people actually listen to the station yet.
Apparently there was another chain above that and then the triple j chain.B nets are commercial radio stations. they have full time employees who earn their living from advertising. they target a more alternative market but they can't piss their advertisers off by pushing their playlists .
National radio has a more open field in some ways, although they don't really target a young audience, which is why the youth radio network was needed, essentially national radio for youth, no ads.
like the bbc has multi channels for different target audiences.can you give us a wider outline on Aust radio?
what are the commercial chains? -

my point being if you're going to biff out the old school then you should have a new candidate who can do better in mind.
who's got cred in your book? (excluding one's self of course)

^^Chris Hocquard would be my choice for next NZoA head.

Chris Hocquard would be my choice for next NZoA head.
not bad, good knowledge and experience, loves music, smooth dresser, proven track record in philanthropic endeavors (ie does things for free to help his community)
wonder if there's anyone with radio experience that would be good for the plugging team, someone who knows how it works, doesn't roll over and die when they say no, etc.
I'd still like an explanation on how some of these sure fire radio fodder hits got like SJD beautiful Haze (I know its not hip hop but it is a good example of kiwi) got sidelined.
you can pick your own hiphop classics that should have been bigger. lets make a list. -
Rhian Sheehan and 50hz should have blown up more. Dei Hamo has always been good even with his most american of accents , but hey we don't complain when foppish indy bands sound pommy or crap reggae bands sound jamaican. I guess it's just what you gotta do to sound authentic ? Some of his tunes could still piggyback of savages hopeful success. Id like to see Chong nee get long overdue kudos as well.
Actually Im still struggling to see understand how scribe blew up of 'the crusader' when he'd given his best shit to p-money earlier in the piece.

Um, yes we do complain, the whole point of nz on air was Our Voice. you shouldn't be ashamed of your own accent or have to fake it to be accepted in your own country. The funding was to go to support the difference, not wipe it out.
That said we are a country made up of influences from the 4 corners of the world we came from, so a bit of brit, polynesian , etc perfectly ok, but a bit of ourselves would be nice too. as simon said overseas can do perfectly good versions of that without the need for some snotty nosed colony emulating them.

and your mention of disc covers, have you seen the new redesign?
There are no track listings on the outside of the cover. If you've got the disc in the player and want to know what track 10 is you have to either eject the dic and read it on the label or pull the booklet out of the slimline tray and locate it inside the sleeve. Slim line booklets being much more irritating to slide in and out.
They do however have a giant NZ on air logo on the outward facing page in the booklet, where customarily you would have the tracklistings for easy access, and I would have thought easy access was way up on the list so as not to piss off programmers delicate sensibilities. That's a free pointer for the hitdisc people.I've just seen the new hit disc and low and behold they redesigned it to remove the giant logo and install an easily readable track list on the inside cover.
Why is it it took em 5 months to fix this mistake, was it anything to do with me mentioning it? and if so why am I not on the payroll? -
hello? can't find the nz on air discussion I was reading. is this it?
-
I think you've blown some kind of hole in the space-time continuum. It says two years ago but it seems to be exactly the same discussion ...

Aw, sorry, I'm going to close this one too. Re-reading robbery's passive-aggressive snark all over again was a bit much deja vu.
Maybe another time.
