The “s” being right next to the “d”, yes it is a Dexterous slip rather than Freudian - my fingers are just so big and my mind is well in a word addled, it should be
“You bounce your balls up and down, toss them into a basket and you score”.
That is basketball and that is so Rock N Roll.

Andre, I was probably underneath the plywood with you in 96 at the Big Wash Out...
I see Messrs Baillie & Kara have listed their top 10 BDO moments in the Herald today... shame they dont mention any females... So to provide some feminine balance, here are three of my top BDO moments...
- Hole / 1999 (Not satisfied with pulling females up onto the stage during their excellent set Courtney then preceded to give her guitar away to a girl in the audience. “Swear to me you will play this, you will not sell it, you will form a band. Swear to me!” Astonishing and uplifting)
- PJ Harvey / 2003 (She opened with ‘Dress’ and ‘Water’ and then played five songs from the guitar heavy and angst-driven ‘Rid of Me’ album. God was looking after us oldies in the audience that day)
- Elastica / 1996 (as many have mentioned the rain brought a halt to the music so cue punters holding up the flooring boards of the pit to use as makeshift umbrellas and long / angry chanting of “bullshit!” until the music began again. I got totally drenched down the front bobbing and squelching to fine tunes like ‘Connection’)Sleater-Kinney in 06 and Breeders in 94 also were most excellent.
Messrs Baillie & Kara also noted Mr Toogood crowd surfing at the BDO 03, alas I dont remember that at all - however I do recall Dion of the D4 singing the second verse of ‘Heartbreaker’ while being held aloft by the massive pit crowd…
Which was also the year (03) I thought things in the BDO world began to get to a little dribbly (to use the previous metaphor...)

On a slight (!) tangent, I drove up to Feilding today and the square was full of vintage cars with Great Gig in the Sky blasting out of the hospitality tent. Just a little surreal.

Some memories of Big Day Out in no particular order (some have alread been mentioned):
The Chilli Peppers getting the crowd to take a single step back in unison due to people getting squashed up front.
The year some sort of weather bomb hit, and the people using planks of plywood to shelter from the rain. They were later used for crowd surfing as a steamy fog settled over the rain-drenched crowd. The whole thing would have been eerie if it weren't for the mosh pit chaos.
Courtney Love giving her guitar away to a girl in the front row and making her give some sort of promise about joining a rock band and taking over the world.
Courtney Love starting a story about a Maori girl she new at a Nelson highschool during her time in NZ. Her mike then made a horrible feedbacky noisey sound -- she lost her train of thought and went on to her next song.
Waiting for over two hours for a drunk friend who promised he would be "right back". He never showed. It turned out he'd got himself arrested for being a drunken dickhead and bumping and falling over people. According to his account he got taken down when he tried to kick one of the police officers who stopped him. His face didn't look to flash when I saw him the next day, but he was fairly philosophical about the whole experience.
Billy Bragg making a joke about baby name statistics with reference to Tory prime ministers -- apparently the popularity of Margaret and John had plummeted during the eighties and nineties respectively.
One of Bic Runga's songs (in my mind it is Sway) floating through the summer heat to me at the back end of the stadium, and me thinking how perfect it sounded.

The year some sort of weather bomb hit
It was almost knee deep in the NW corner of the field. People were making paths through it out of upturned bread trays.

Such as the Lees and West not being the greatest of buddies, Aussie leg of the tour subsidising the Auckland BDO for a while now it seems. And possibly branching out into Asia. -
A favourite early memory is of Booga from Head Like a Hole climbing up the frame between main stages after an absolutely blistering set and gleefully eyeballing the Breeders, challenging them to top that. Cracking bit of anti-cultural cringe.
Laughing along to Dave Graney and the Coral Snakes in 1997. Dave was the best self-proclaimed sex-symbol ever.
Battles a couple of years ago. Converted instantly and have discovered a lot of good music as a result (Don Caballero and Tyondai Braxton's solo work in particular..)
But mostly, he tangata, he tangata, he tangata..

I am unsure about this subsidising call - good PR angle but from my experience no Australian firm subsidies anything in NZ - its to opposite, NZ is a profit making territory, just sayin...
