First time I've ever posted online with my real name...
Are we going to 'fess up to our nom de blogs? I'll start, I'm Redbaiter.
;)

noms de blog?

What about a link to Public Address System on the Public Address front page?
'fessing up to my full name - I have day-job issues, hence the continued partial anonymity. But as a token of good faith, I did give my full name when I registered.
Could someone explain how to put urls into posts if html isn't enabled. The instructions to the left of the 'post a reply' box are too cryptic for me.
And again, thanks for this fantastic forum. I'm thrilled to have a way of discussing / comemnting / posting in a Public Address community.

It's easier than it looks. Replace url with the link and replace text with the words you want to lead to the link.
As an example (and using curved brackets instead of square ones) to link to Google, it would look like this:
And remember the | between the URL and the text. Got it?

Pleased to be here. Hope you don't mind just half my name. I still feel the need for a bit of anon. I'm supposed to be right most of the time in my day job, so I relish the opportunity to be wrong.

Thanks, Robyn.

I feel i was left out... so my real name is Paul Sanderson

I think I'll stick to "Yamis" for reasons I went over quite some time ago in me blogsite when it came up in public address I think. Namely, I'm a secondary school teacher and I couldn't possibly spill the beans on the yoof of today if I did.
You know what though. In all my years of hoovering through forums I've never come across anybody I know. Maybe it's not such a small world after all.

Great

Like everyone else: thanks for the time and effort that has gone into this - it ought to be interesting.
With regards to the "when I log in to reply to a post, I get bounced back to the front page problem". If anyone comes up with a solution to that I would be interested to know about it.
cheers
Terence

From my experience of all other 'forums' over the years they always chuck you back to the front page if you log in from someplace else.
The best solution is to either stay permanently logged in on the computer(s) you most often use or else log in when you come to the site and then start foraging for things to nibble on.

Looks wonderful.
I wonder how long it'll be before some journo or politician makes headlines by having a brain explosion while posting on here.
Can't wait!

Hi Yamis,
that makes me feel a bit better actually, given that the forum that I'm soon to be charged with taking care of does the anoying bounce back thing. At least it will be constant with everyone else.

This behaviour has now been changed/fixed. If you log in to PA System midway through a forum topic you will be returned to the page you were on. For the technically-minded, this is accomplished simply by passing the location of the current page through the login process.

Russell, just my humble opinion, but if you're going to allow pseudonyms (and I don't think you should, but you're the boss) I think you should be very strict with those few that hide behind their keyboards - whether they think they have to or not.
Also, timeouts are a good way of cooling people off if you don't feel the need to go all the way and get the ban hammer out, so do keep that in mind if someone posts drunk or gets over excited or whatever.
Lastly, and only assuming that it's true, I'm completely astonished to see Redbaiter posting under his real name.

hmmmmm.. yes, i had lunch with this "llewellyn/redbaiter" character several weeks back, and he strikes me as the blog denizen type.
RB, keep an eye on that one i reckon.

Thanks Matthew for the tip about the login bouce.

Wouldn't it be nice if every post had a real name. There are plenty of toilet walls, real and metaphorical, where the anonymous can express opinions which they don't want their mothers or their children or their workmates or their partners or their students to connect with them.
An opinion should not be furtive, it should be bold.

I'm telling your brother on you.

I second all these comments. We fucking rock. ;) Well done Russ-Matt-Karl. Go on, moderate me, I dare ya.
And I'm telling your Mum ...

Excellent companion to PA.

Morgan, I fibbed. Redbaiter would be appalled that I have taken credit for his work.

GoodWork Guys. :-)
Encouraging real names is great idea. Hopefully will cut down on the mad rant and lazy txt-speak post factor a bit...
-
oooh this is cool....i wonder if "i just discovered public address system" will be a suitable excuse for me to use with my students when i tell them i haven't marked their essays?
-
I undertake to post using this five-year old ID with the same coherence of argument, non-abusiveness, tolerance of fellow creatures and contribution to genuine dialogue for which it is known. No-one will know my real name. My real name, and my gender, location, background, profession and interests add nothing to the context or content of my contribution, and would do nothing to enrich the quality of anyone's cyberlife at all.
