Not true.. large scale derivatives trading did happen in in NZ in the 1980s, via the New Zealand Futures and Options Exchange which operated in the country from 1984-2003.
Well I stand corrected on my interpretation of what Gio was saying. Or do I? LOL.
@steve parks.
Actually, he did it before he met Pitt’s character. His Nazi killing is what attracted the ‘Basterds’ to him. He made a moral decision to be anti-Nazi without any intervention from the Americans.
Yes, but he carried it on afterward with particular relish too.
I’m fairly sure Tarantino made it clear enough that the subject of this revenge fantasy was Nazis, and not Germans in general.
I don't think it was very clear at all. As I said, German was conflated with Nazi. The only 'innocent' Germans in the film were the soldiers sinking some piss after a son was born, and the actor who was traitoring for the Allies. The soldiers were depicted as probably not being Nazis, but certainly as extremely annoying wankers who saw no problem imposing upon a famous woman, and the woman undermined her own moral sanctity by killing the man after he had surrendered, taking advantage of the fact that he had just had a son and most likely wished to at least see him before he died. But again, that was OK because he was a German. It turned out to be an especially repulsive scene in the end.
First, it assumes the maximization of liberty only in the sense that by default you have liberty if no convincing reasons are given for any particular restriction.
There's nothing a priori about that. I happen to like it as a principle, but I don't know that other people find it anywhere near as convincing. Or perhaps a better way of putting it would be that other people's threshold for overriding it is extremely low. They might think it should be overridden just because someone else finds that liberty offensive, for instance. Or they might even go so far as to say the it is liberties, not restrictions, that need to be justified.

artistic statements
Sexist hate videos are nothing to be proud of, gangsta boy.
Weak cowardly men take on those they see as weaker - surprise, it's women, children, ethnic minorities and migrants, disabled people, LGBT, etc.
Grow the fuck up, show some real balls.
-
Other leading artists must be impressed, right?
"The stuff that Eminem came out with was out of his own mind and it's kind of obvious that [King's] just kind of imitating what Eminem does," Scribe said.
"Those aren't his own thoughts, those aren't his actual original concepts or anything, it's all been done before so that's kind of why I'm not a fan - I'm into people just being themselves."

Derivatives existed and the financial sector could do a lot of damage to the productive sector quite quickly but nowhere close to what became technically possible on the global financial-informatic networks in the Nineties - at least that's my understanding of it.

Bjork lingered enigmatically in the kitchen, devouring a large chocolate cake.
at least she wasn't swanning about...

Beautiful clip, Geoff. So nonchalantly proud of where they come from.

holding a mirror up to society highlighting violence...Defend his right to make artistic statements however he sees fit instead of hanging him out to dry with a weak apology.
I'd say NZ is a little too conservative to ground this kind of argument Robbie. To contextualize, both 'Hostel 2' and 'Run! Bitch run!" were banned in New Zealand. So I assume then that there's very little precedent on which to base an argument in support of this work if the establishment just can't recognize the artistic merit of the entire genre.
Moreso, outside of the cultural context which accepts these kinds of films, the video would lack cultural relevance to the general viewing audience.
unlike some others (the clip is embedded at that link), I'm not inclined to blame NZ On Air for this. I don't think it's practical or desirable to have a government agency dictating content in advance for a $5000 video grant.
I posted the likelihood of this kind of scenario elsewhere, a few years back, While I agree it would be impractical to have a government agency dictating content in advance, I don't see anything impractical about first requiring the artists to provide some kind of video concept before bequeathing $5000 to make a video. That would at least make a modicum of sense. Guilt by willfully ignorant association
Sacha, you omitted this telling section from your Scribe quote;
Asked if he was worried about repercussions from his comments, Scribe said: "I'd knock that guy out before he even came up my driveway, if it came down to that kind of thing."
A real threat of violence carried by the country's mainstream media, in response to video mock up (which obviously must have been very well made to stir up this kind of reaction) does illustrate the kind of hypocrisy Robbie touches on.
leading on to
Anti-violence groups called last weekend for the taxpayer-funded video to be banned from television,
Does seem to be some confusion here. "Anti-violence/knock the guy out?".
-
Bjork sums up the dangers of non-contextual imagery in the last part of this informative video on how a TV works.
She says 'You shouldn't let poets lie to you.'
-
Loved that clip--certainly more instructive than the Russian Mayonnaise Tour: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNOFhoWeZfk
Bjork is so endearing. I will use this piece in my TV course next semester.

Scribe has tweeted thus:
Q was "Would I be scared if Dirty Sesh came to my house?" being a father with small children at my house I'd knock anyone out
Which casts a slightly different light on the comment.

Automated high-speed trading software multiplied the effect
A little while ago a company (NZ) wanted to know if they could get a more accurate fix of UT (Universal time - aka Greenich Mean time) from the Measurement Standards Lab - NZ Time Standard - so that their servers could really really be sure that when they shuffled shit over the financial net that they had a good chance of being "on time" ie first.
It scares the shit out of me that people are throwing billions a day around the place with a microsecond stroke of a mouse.
My fix to the "high speed trading" shinnanigans is to put a 1, 2, 4, 8, 12 or 48 (you pick) hour delay in the buy or sell. Microsecond trading is bizarre and unadulterated greed.
-
Which casts a slightly different light on the comment.
Certainly different, but I'm still at a loss Russell, he has small children in his house, so if there are hypothetical repercussions from making the comment;
"I'd knock that guy out before he even came up my driveway"
then he will knock the guy out.
before he comes up his driveway, ie. anywhere. It sounds like the threats of violence are pretty one sided. Question is, is he setting a better example for his violence validating small children than a music video depicting violence?
This wouldn't be the same Scribe that had an alcohol fueled episode at a party a few years back (which vanished off the internet), who first came to fame on P-Money's Big Things album of 1993? Maybe the system just sent Dirty Sesh the wrong message.
It's still not ok.
-
Scribe also tweeted:
It wasn't a personal attack I meant in general..Anyone with bad intentions.
That is, if someone tried to attack him and his family in his house, he'd resist forcefully. He's also not making a song and dance about what a tough dude that makes him.
-
Was a threat issued by Dirty Sesh? You're joking with that last line aren't you Sacha? Will Blur and Oasis be involved?
-
Chris, it's hard to respond when you edit that severely.
-
Sorry Sacha, I've changed it back to something resembling it's former self, "if there are any repercussions from this comment, I'll knock you out before you even come up my driveway. " obviously not
-
You originally wrote "did Dirty Sesh threaten Scribe?". The above comments I think are pretty clear it was a general comment about any threat.
For more, talk to my man LL Cool J..
-
sorry about the shiftiness there. Surely Scribe would call 911 first, no?
-
-
Ur, 111 possibly?
-
He's too hiphopified for 111 Islander,
Some funny puns going on with 'jammy' in that video Sacha. -
Heh!
(OK it's a slow day here, and a really slow person reading to boot-) -

Indeed but I think we'd be surprised how instantly wired the exchanges were in the later part of 1980s. I had the misfortune of dating (I've never used that word before in relation to myself, but can't find it in myself to put more more of a positive spin on the relationship) someone who was involved in the industry at the time and saw the banks of internationally connected devices (via Reuters IIRC) which allowed for online trading long before most of us had any idea what that word meant more than a phone call.
