And Sony have just announced that the PS3 will play 3D Blu-Ray discs as well. So expect 3D games in 2010 as well.
-
See 3D games would make craploads of sense. That's a massive market just waiting for a winner. Halo 3-D where the bullets come out of the screen straight at you? You could double the price on the game and still sell craploads as long as the hardware (3D TVs I guess) start to be standard.
3D live sports? Can't see it being big.

Then again, I'm still incredibly jealous of those places that'll get to see the All Whites thumped in one extra dimension.
i feel sorry for all those one eyed people

Ah shit. Those poor cantabs. Feel their pain.

As far as I can tell Avatar is only showing in 3D in about five cinemas *in the country* (two Hoyts in Auckland, one Reading in Wellington, a Hoyts and a Reading in Chch) so unless I've missed any major chains, the selling-out is really not very surprising.
*Edit*: I did, as Damien mentioned the IMax in Auckland in his post, but there can't be that many others, so it's still pretty restricted.
We only got in by booking early for Boxing Day. OTOH, they're right - it is worth waiting to see in 3D.
-
Hey Lucy, I just counted 9 cinemas in Auckland showing it in 3D, so it shouldn't be that hard to find a seat, even in Ch'ch.

..and Chartwell in Hamilton, where it has been booked out for days.
-
I had to book in October to get tickets to see Avatar at the Imax in London. Now that I want to see it again it seems I won't be able to get seats till the end of the month.
I have heard that the 3D experience is still pretty good at non Imax cinemas though

Nope, definitely only two in Chch unless the Rialto or something is showing it, which I find unlikely.

Gizmodo explains how all the different types of 3D work. Including the glasses-less version which seems to use...luminous spheres

Avatar is apparently playing in 3D in Hokitika... (and Nelson and Tauranga, Mt Maungauni, and Te Puke). It's not just the big smoke (and Hamilton),

Which makes it increasingly silly that Dunedin doesn't have it.
-
While vacationing in the Bay of Plenty over the break, I was told that the cinema in Te Puke is one of the best in the country
-
the nelson one upgraded specifically for 'avatar' and the 30 other 3d movies due this year. combined with the upgrade to digital sound last year, it made for quite a treat.
-
The upgrades required for a cinema are to the screen and a digital projector, around $100,000 plus.
So I dont think the cinema in Hokitika is really showing it in 3D.
The posters may claim otherwise. -

Have they just hired some people to stand at the front and throw things at the audience?
-
apparently they cut a hole in the screen so you see actual west coast bush when supposedly looking at pandora.

If it's done right, I totally disagree. Getting good audio to go with the immersive visuals might be a problem, but imagine being able to watch replays that put you on the field in the midst of the action as well as the elevated view we're used to?

Bit of blue bodypaint and some platform shoes and no one would know the difference, I tell you mate
-
immersive visuals
And look at the head start we could have with both Weta and Virtual Spectator born in this land.
-

imagine being able to control that player in the midst of the action...oh hang on:)
-
control that player
Oh yes. Loop the whole thing, blend players from different eras. Motion capture, anyone?

Re: Hoktika, you've made the news.
