What a waste of a good fistmobile.
Well, that's what you are meant to think...;)
Well, we could all pretend I meant 'waste' as in 'what a waste to use it in that daft campaign in the first place, when it could instead be put to a better use leading a revamped Hero Parade along K Road'.

It seated (permanently) 77000! When a game was on the towns were empty.
Amazing. The scale of college football is hard to believe sometimes.

Good point. It's actually a shame someone didn't seek an expression from gay Auckland. There are many more big, brown, buff gay boys playing rugby here than is generally acknowledged.
It will be interesting to see how Family and Urge go during the RWC. The latter is/was actually co-owned by a sports media professional.

No. It’s Auckland trying to be Auckland – not trying to be Sydney. That’s the point.
AKL got described once as 'Sydney for beginners'. I forget who said it.

It’s unbelievably ugly.
I saw it from the penthouse apartment of the Hilton, and I gotta admit from there it is kinda trippy and to be there for the concerts could be fun....hmmmm

Friday Sept 16 -- Che Fu on the main stage then The Turnaround at The Cloud till late. That's a party.

I gotta say that "Cloud" structure reminds me of nothing so much as a liver fluke - maybe a subtle reference to the parasitic sponsorship...
I was appalled that St John ambulances have to cover up their "non-RWC-contributing sponsors on their ambulances at the games - fosters real community spirit that does!
Strange there isn't a German rugby team with a big German Sponsor - like Adidas - I hadn't realised that Adidas was started by a couple of Nazi Party members (Adolf "Adi" Dassler & Rudolf) they later fell out with Rudolf starting Puma... -

Having lived in both, I would imagine it was said by someone who had lived in neither.

Lest we forget. At the same time he was involved with senior rugby admin in Auckland, he was a co-owner of one of the city's best clubs, an illicit gay one.

I did not know that. Any of it.

Very moving few minutes on Lew from NZ on Screen.
He was a quite a guy.

The best definition I have heard is that 'if you can smoke while doing it then it isn't a sport'. This removes golf from being a sport which is an added bonus.
As to the sweating thing does it cover nervous/concentration sweat? Because I have played chess tournaments where I have sweated more than from more physical sports.

Ok, I'm sold for 2 weeks checking out the scenes in Auckland down on the waterfront. How long does this RWC go for? I'm all about this music offspring.

I am - quite good- at both Scrabble and chess, but I gave up on tournament games many years ago because I *hate* timed moves. Sweating - yeah, I did, because I couldnt understand the rush (of all kinds) and certainly didnt appreciate it...
there is established, now, a very interesting overlap between so-called gifted people IQwise (am one) and Asperger's spectrum (I seem to fit on it.) This fits obliquely onto this thread - we are self-involved and have great difficulty understanding things like crowd enthusiasm, and can also seem rude/impolite when we state things that are obvious - well, to me! - but are either irritating or hurtful to other people.
Apologies if I have hurt anyone's feelings- Islander, who still cant get over the hill(passes now open only to vehicles with chains) and still doesnt know the condition of our beloved Black Bach...

No worries luv :) What are you apologising for? It is what it is and all of us are right. I'm pissed of with bits. I am already paying increased rates There are definitely things I think more important, but we already booked the fucking thing and I guess I am no good at doing harsh on this. And I get to go away as well but I just decided, I will check out the music. If I had my way, we wouldn't need to rely on Rugby to live in a good healthy respectful society. I keep trying to compare my places of choice that I can live, and I am stuck in the sunshine in the Far North cos it is grassroots ANZ. Guess I have to get with the programme
<shrugs, :)>
This is for you ma friend xx

Is this whole thing really because We As A Nation have never fully workshopped our feelings about Sesqui?

Re: is (not) a Sport.
Sport is a thing where what you do to win directly opposes what the other person is doing to win at the same time.Ball sports involve moving a ball to the opponents end of the field, as they try to take it from you and return it to your end (or, like tennis, where you hit it in such a way they can't easily hit it back, as they do the same).
Fighting sports involve making the other person stop fighting you, by fighting them. Often somewhat abstractly to preserve the competitors.
Games are not sports in that your opponents cannot oppose you, as such, you just take turns doing similar things and see who's done best at the end. Contract bridge.
Races are not sports because applying opposition is generally frowned apon, even when you race simultaneously. Some sporting elements in many races, but only in a very abstract sense.
Skydiving is not a sport, but it is really dangerous, considered on a death-per-hour basis. Life in general, meanwhile, is six times more lethal than cycling, but they don't make you wear a helmet for it.

You're probably taking the piss, but I _love_ watching woodchopping competitions. Man + log + ax. What's not to love.

I quite like Speed Chainsawing, too. In fact, the whole Outdoorsperson Does Important Outdoorsy Things With Tools At Speed genre is pretty fun.

*cough* Isn’t it a shame that the usual suspect probably haven't even heard of the Bingham Cup? Now that’s rugby I could feign an interest in! :)

What are your thoughts on shearing? Because I want to get behind that, but I always worry for the sheep?
(I once did a live cross from a woodchopping competition at the chch show. I nearly squeed on air.)
-
Danielle, in reply to
What are your thoughts on shearing?
I justify this by theorising - in the time-honoured tradition of 'talking bollocks on shit I know squat about' - that the sheep would be terribly hot come January and thus their initial discomfort is for the greater good. Like trimming your dog's claws. You know she hates it, but she would also hate not being able to walk properly.
(Also, I eat lamb, so basically I'm an asshole anyway.)
-
Megan Wegan, in reply to
Oh, I am all for shearing as a general rule. I assume farmers know more about that than me. It's just that in competition shearing, the sheep always seems slightly distressed.
But then, what would I know?
