Can't speak for Stewart, but I would say that of all the commentators we have at the moment, he's probably the tallest.

I'll take Tommy Smyth with a Y over having to subscribe to Sky Sport to watch the champions league any day, actually. Currently it was sitting very pretty on my basic cable arrangement with Telstra, with includes ESPN.

Ian Jones is of much the same quality as Ian Smith (Alias Smith & Jones?) but as an ex-AB he has at least 'been there & done that' and has an insiders p-o-v.
You'd think that might make him a little better than "Smithy", but sadly...
Got to admit, we cracked up when my darling heard Ian Jones making comments and asked who was the outrageously camp commentator - we had taken him for granted up till then & suddenly realised she was right! He does sound very camp. Can't hear him without smiling, now. -
I've always thought Smith made a fairly good commentator in both cricket and rugby. He tends to get the names of the players going on and off the field etc correct. Pisses the hell out of me when I'm watching a game and the commentators mix up the players. I start talking loudly at the TV going "No that's not Rodney, that's Ma'a you twits!"
Grant Fox I find moderately insightful as a rugby analysis guy. The few times I catch his newspaper column it's OK as well.

Fox makes some good comments although, strangely, is probably the most provincially parochial commentator in the country (Mex doesn’t count).
But he’s hardly a critic, is he?

I know that I'm more or less on my own in disagreeing with this opinion, but I just wanted to raise the point that the V8 Supercars have two [of the three they have] of the best sports commentators in the sporting world. Neil Crompton and Mark Skaife. Skaife is great for the fact he can supply technical knowledge of the curent car model [having only retired last year] and Crompton is also an ex-driver.
They manage to juggle the informative commentary for those who are watching their first race with the more in-depth stuff for those who [like me] have been lifelong followers. Oh, and then there's the times they'll just stuff around and joke with each other.I hate F1 commentary though. And A1GP.

And even that scourge of public events, who has made a career (I suppose you can call it a career) out of removing clothes in public, was removed after, well, removing her clothes in public. We all know her name don't make me write it.
I've been out of NZ for a while but this is odd - there's really someone who does this regularly? Are they an attention seeker or just suffer from a mental illness?

You could argue that, given their career, it's just advertising. Hell, they're probably deducting the removed clothes as a business expense.

LL's ex-boyfriend reportedly wanted his money back for the 'enhancements' and the clothes not removed for the 'streak' were sold on TradeMe. That would make interesting accounting entries.

I guess I'm in the "cringe with revulsion" camp.
I can't begin to tell you how many people I know all heartily complain about the plethora of car racing on TV One and TV3 these days. ( one mate calls it Car Porn )
Time was, on a cold rainy saturday or sunday you could always turn on the telly and watch a good movie in the afternoon.
Nowadays all there is is motor racing. BOOR - RING !I heard a guy once on some sports talkback program bemoaning the amount of car racing and asking why other sports weren't covered - he was followed by someone from motor racing NZ ( or something) who said " well if you want to pay as much as we do for coverage then you can have equal air time " .
Is that how it works ?
If that IS how it works, then isn't it just a big advertising spot for the motor racing industry ( and thus for car, tyre , auto accessory and oil Companies ) ?
Not insinuating anything , i'm just saying. -

Is that how it works ?I always thought it was because Sky bought the rights to any interesting sports, so TV1 and TV3 end up with the dross.
But perhaps there is a bit more to it - ie Motorsport NZ may have made the decision to avoid Sky's (probably superior) offer, in order to allow their product to reach a wider audience. If this is the case then good on them. Other sports could also get long term benefits from staying on the free-to-air channels.

I don't know how it is for other sports, but if you're a sport that they dont' think there will be a good audience for, yes, you have to pay.
I understand it's about $50K to bring in the outside broadcasting teams for a day to film your sport, for a basic coverage with a few cameras.
That doesn't get you on the TV, you'd have to pay more for that.

TV3 used to show 3 Sport Motorsport from 12 - 6 every Sunday and Shell Helix/Powerbuilt Tools Motorsport has been hosted by Geoff Bryan for the past 9 years [from 3 - 6] but I'm reasonably certain that there used to be something before then.
An re: Motorsport NZ I presume he was meaning costs to actually run in the sport.
And yeah, Brent's right. SKY has F1, Indy, NASCAR, WRC and a couple of other motorsports, while free-to-air has [at last count] Netball, Basketball, A1GP, NZV8s, V8 Supercars and golf and rugby highlights. Oh and one-off things like the ASB Classic.

Oh and top-tier motorsport hasn't really expanded over my lifetime [unless you're an IRL or A1GP fan]
