Fair warning: I am in the process of titling paintings, and I steal good lines.

I dunno about stock art.
I guess it moves at a fair clip... -

That sounds like a Solo Passion.

I get the impression that neither Rich nor Ben want to talk about anything to do with art in case someone says rude things about the kind of music that they like. And fair enough.
But just try coming up with something of your own, making it, then putting it out there and standing by it. See what kind of reaction you get.
Then we can talk.

And, in my case at least, you'd be wrong.

There are so many ways of creating beyond what is mostly labelled as 'art' that a discussion soon gets pretty reductive.

Then what did this mean?
The older I get, the less I care (in all senses) for other peoples implicit or explicit judgement on my tastes.

Whatcha talkin’ ’bout, Willis?
Point me to something creative that someone doesn’t claim is art. The standard definitions are pretty goddamn inclusive.
People have been talking as if the old distinctions between art forms – 'high' art 'low' art etc – are still current. As if it were 50 years ago or more.

Exactly what it says.
If I like something, I don't want (care) to have to waste my life justifying that liking to someone, and I don't care if they actively dislike it. If they disagree, then they can go and commit a crime of performance art on themselves. Or not. It's up to them.
If they like something that I am indifferent to, like chamber music, for example, I'm not going to get all up in their grill about what a waste of time it is for them to like it. Each to their own, I knows what I likes and I likes what I knows, etc, etc, etc.
If you want to talk about the definition of art, on this forum, with other like-minded individuals, then go for your life. But I'm simply not interested enough in exploring the question to participate.

I don't enjoy that, certainly, but mostly the conversation bores me. It's like people talking about their dogs, when you're not a dog person.
-
Oh, and feel free to say rude things about my tastes in music all you like. I've had 25-odd years of it, so the calluses are reasonably thick by now.

All of these things have been art works. Someone's recently had a baby in a gallery as an art work even.

Rich and Ben: I’ll do a generalised response, without quotes.
You chose to participate in this discussion. If you want to take the ‘I don’t know much about art (mutter mutter imply something about effete snobs) but I know what I like’ line, fine. No skin off my nose. But I wasn’t the one to start casting aspersions.
Yes, I enjoy talking about this stuff. It’s my life. It also seems to interest other people. However, virtually no-one is prepared to discuss it in public. And I’m really sick of the sound of my own voice. I’d like to hear other people’s points of view.
I really don’t think I ask that much. All I want from life is to be able to do my work, my work, and put it out there for anyone else who might be interested.
Apparently this is tantamount to a crime. People whisper behind my back, call me names, try to nobble me in various ways. But rarely say anything to my face, oh no. And definitely not in public.
For the temerity of going to art school, I have had three years of people saying, as if with one voice, ‘Oh no, you’re not a painter, and those are not paintings. We do not want to look at them, and never will we discuss them. You’re a performance artist, and have you considered doing a video?’
My partner and I are on the bones of our arse, and these smug people with comfortable salaries call me a sell-out and all kinds of other names for showing in dealer galleries, as if there’s anywhere else that will even deign to consider showing paintings. There is a reason I do not go for public funding or show my work in public galleries. They don't want to know.
You need a thick skin to be a painter here today. You’re up against it, every step of the way.
And if you push back instead of knuckling under, then it’s all on. No holds barred.
All I want is to make my work and put it out there. I don’t think this is too much to ask. It is not unreasonable or outrageous.
But just you try it. See what kind of reaction you get. How would you respond?
-
Well, if performance art is inclusive of putting words in my mouth that I never said, then you're all that and more.
This thread was originally about the Libz. It's morphed into an art thread. My contributions so far amount to admitting I liked 'Battlefield Earth' when I was 15, noting that similar ground was covered on this forum 18 months ago, and explaining several times that if someone else likes something that I don't, and vice versa, then that's fine and dandy and doesn't on my part imply a value judgement. Also, by implication, that there's no obligation on my part to like something that I simply....don't.
mutter mutter imply something about effete snobs
Words coming out of your head, not mine, mate.
If all that has somehow contributed towards you starving in a garret, then I'm sorry. But you wouldn't be the first.
And, sarcasm aside, I sympathise. I'm not of a creative bent, but I'm married to someone who is, who has struggled for 14 years to get the recognition she should be due, and is only now starting to see hopeful signs.
It's the way of the world. The mountain doesn't have an obligation to come to Mohammed.

I hear you, I like what you do, it is art by any definition, and yeah it's tough out there, always was, always will be, but arguing the toss, hell that just makes life unnecessarily hard.
Painting is for wimps, I wrestle my images out of stone. Michelangelo (he the bar brawler who refused a Pope). -

Now there is an argument worth having!
I came across an argument recently that painting is derived from carving. This was in a discussion about early Renaissance painted and carved images, but the connection to Maori carving, tatooing, and painting was striking I thought.
As a consequence I have tried introducing carving virtues into my paintings.
