Joe, I've lived in Beijing since 2001, apart from 6 months back in NZ in 2002 and a year working in Tianjin (but back to civilisation almost every weekend), but I'd never heard of that place until this Mainzeal/Richina mess blew up. Hmm... if you trust Baidu maps, then following Trip Advisors instructions will get you to the wrong end of Workers Stadium. Their own website suggests you should trust Baidu Maps. It being at the south gate might partially explain why I'd never heard of the place, as I've only hung out around the western and northern areas of Workers Stadium on the few occasions I steel myself for a visit to that part of town.
I also note that Richina's Chinese name is just as dumb as its English name. Not that that's in any way meaningful.
ETA: I really don't see the point in an underwater world in an inland and very dry city. I do, however, recommend the aquarium at Xinghai Park in Dalian. Not only is it right on the coast, but it's pretty well built and run.

2015 hey? A bid to get the government over the hump for the 2014 election; National cannot afford for Christchurch people to revolt before the general election. So they are delaying telling ratepayers what we will have to pay to fund the ruinous anchor projects deemed by Cera and the Cabinet to be essential.

What amused me today was the fact that the lights in Latimer Square are being changed to colored hightec things donated by Philips to add beauty to the place. Well as far as i can tell after 10 pm not much is happening there, except a few druggies still doing whatever they do and the odd tourist lost looking for Riccarton.
Makes me think what will Philips want for that koha? -

My bad. I retract that hasty comment I read this story in the print press today and came to a different conclusion: Govt will tell the CCC by April 30 who will pay what.
Though my concern is that we being told, not consulted, asked or involved in the substantive public planning decisions for the whole city.

Good one Goodie! Those builders look like they know they are doing an historic thing. I love that cardboard cathedral. It represents the new ways of doing life that we need here.

Thanks Hebe i did think of the historic angle and how there can only be one that is the first to be placed. Anyway the building site is a very calm and organized place. Truly the only one building that peaked my interest post quake so far in this city.

Looking at this again, it's a very "Brave New World" pic with the empty IRD building in the background (and if you were able to see behind the yellow crane the levelled CTV site). Says more about Christchurch and what is happening than solely that the cathedral is being raised -- clever Gudrun.

Mentioning the IRD Building this is the latest sign from someone needing a bit of tough love. Why do they insist on destroying windows?

I'm glad you're looking forward to the part-cardboard/steel/wood/concrete cathedral, I don't know who is it supposed to serve?
The old cathedral was where I've paraded, my father, his father and his father before him. It's where I went to dawn services.
I loved it because it was full of pretension and even had a wall of swastikas.
I'm starting to warm to the part-cardboard/steel/wood/concrete cathedral, now. -

I guess if nothing else a place of beauty (hopefully) and calm to reflect before you head out into the very unrestful CBD. Anglicans will go there; people who wish to remember people from CTV will have a quiet place.
Is the Square War memorial still standing? I haven't even thought to look, and that's a significant place for me.
