  • Islander, in reply to Jos,

Kia ora Jos- excellent photos! As with so many posters in this thread...

Round here, Royal Australian spoonbills nest in the same area & trees as kotuku - they seem to be quite handy in the Waitangi-taona bush...

"The royal spoonbill is here, really a beak with a bird
attached, kotuku-ngutupapa as the naming goes, 'a bare
black face and baleful yellow eyelids'. The little shag is here,
dancing clown attendance. And in August, the others come.

The lagoon is on the maps. The others build nests and rear
their chicks from blueish-green eggs, all the while elegant themselves
in dorsal aigrette, nuptial plumage. They are not
many: the survivor chicks are also few."

I tried, I tried, I tried. Those jolly tui just flit about too fast. And hide behind all the flowers and twigs.

So many lovely, lovely things! Thank you everyone. I’m not very good with poetry – didn’t recognise the reference in the title of the post and had to google it.

A couple of comments triggered by earlier posts…

I love the flowers on japonica. Joe Wylie mentioned his "mum’s generation used the “apples” from the bushes as a source of pectin" – there are still a few people around who make japonica jelly, one of my favourite things for toast. It’s similar to quince or crabapple jelly but has a unique tang. I get mine from Michael’s Kitchen at the Hill Street Farmers’ Market (Wellington).

Looking at the foliage on Jackie’s mystery pohutukawa-like flower from the zoo, I wondered if it might be a relative of the albizia that Sofie posted on page 3?

Lilith & Nora – I’ve been admiring oxalis flowers since I was small, I used to pick them out of lawns when out walking. It’s a weed, so I was allowed! Here’s some that were on display at Wellington’s Botanic Gardens at the end of summer last year. Not spring I know, but they were growing in the rockeries that are used for lots of colourful spring flowers :)

I was inspired by this to take my camera out with me yesterday and pay attention to springiness… some of the neighbourhood trees are blossoming gorgeously (long may the calm weather last).

Frank Kitts Park at the waterfront has a few varieties of manuka (or similar? - not sure of species) that are all flowering just now, I'd never noticed them before but they're rather gorgeous.

This tui was gorging on the neighbour’s kowhai. Too quick to get a very clear shot!

Think I better stop there and let someone else have a go :)

    Don’t be stupid ;) more!
lovely shots. Think you may be right about the albizia too. The young leaves start to make sense.

Some first signs of spring: the first shoot from the new asparagus bed (and garlic beyond) and the first plum blossoms. Also a shot of the pink-flowering oxalis.

    Pohutakawa blue.

Thanks for joining in Venetia, Geoff and of course everyone else, with more wonderful, colourful, springness.

Venetia, I did actually add a link yesterday to the bottom of the original post to the poem in question. An oversight from when first posted.

    Cheers.
