This morning, it being a very doggy weekend in this household what with canine houseguests and all, we undertook a lovely expedition to our now favourite place in Auckland, Kakamatua Beach. Of course. Where I took a wholly unexpectedly beautiful photo of a very beautiful young woman, the daughter of my friend, kicking up her heels.

Like it, that’s exactly it!
OK Chris Waugh…. here are scenes from the lantern festival last night in Albert Park. What a mad but happy scene it is, so crowded our group was almost instantly separated and it would have been impossible to meet up at our suggested meeting place – the fountain. The fountain had been overtaken by swarms of teens hanging out with the dragons. Thanks to the miracle of cell-phones we were reunited….

It sure was crowded, I was pretty amazed. There was so much noise coming from the fountain area I thought there was some special entertainment, but no, it was just teens in a state of high excitement.
It was, IMHO, much more interesting/entertaining/exciting than 31st December (the other New Year's).
That fountain shot is excellent. Is the white blur across the middle someone walking past?

That blur in the middle is many people walking past over 15 seconds. The bright bright light in the center is the dragon lanterns waving around over 15 seconds.
Must get back tonight for the fireworks!

Thank you, Nora, that Lantern Festival looks great. And fireworks, too, awesome! I'm expecting quite a barrage tonight, last night of the year we're allowed fireworks. Although the calls for people to set off less fireworks to help protect our air quality that followed January's smog crisis might mean less of a barrage than previous years - it's certainly been quieter than normal over the last 10-ish days.
元宵节快乐!Yuánxiāo Jié kuàilè! Happy Lantern Festival!

And to you too! The lantern fest is a real buzz.

The wee one exploring a modern take on the lanterns.
Lion dancers outside. Taking photos while one arm is holding the child, especially in an area rumour has it there was an attempted child abduction just a few weeks ago, is not easy.
The drummers followed the lions inside, but seeing the lions moving away, the decided they'd better grab the drum and follow just as I pushed the button.
ETA: nearly forgot, Auckland's Lantern Festival is so cool that even Xinhua has a write up on it (in Chinese, though - quickly scanning their English site I don't see a translation). No pictures, though. It'd be a much better article if it had a few snapshots.
-
Anyone going to be there tonight? I'll be there with my proper camera this time. All my phone cam shots from last night were weak. Some time around 8, I'd expect.

And the entertainment
Should’ve actually read that Xinhua article rather than just quickly scanning before I hit post, cos it says:
组委会今年特别邀请了来自北京的万能青年旅店摇滚乐团、北京面人表演团、四川省歌舞剧院天资国乐团、四川功夫斟茶表演团和上海杂技团5个中国文艺团体参加演出,他们向当地民众献上了民族舞蹈、现代音乐、中国民乐、杂技和民俗表演等丰富多彩的节目。
And I translate:
The organising committee specially invited 5 Chinese art groups, Wànnéng Qīngnián Lǚdiàn (Omnipotent Youth Hostel?!) rock band from Beijing, Běijīng Miànrén Biǎoyǎntuán (no idea how to translate, too lazy to google), Sìchuān Shěng Gēwǔ Jùyuàn (Sichuan Proince Song and Dance Theatre?) Tiānzīguó Yuètuán (Talented Kingdom band?!), Sìchuān Gōngfu Zhēnchá Biǎoyǎntuán (Sichuan Kungfu and Tea Pouring performance troupe (seriously, you want to see what some people can do with teapots), Shànghǎi Zájì Tuán (Shanghai Acrobatics Troupe), to take part in the performance. They showed the local people rich and colourful programmes of ethnic* dance, modern music, Chinese folk music, acrobatics and folk performances.
I doubt the rock band named is the best Beijing has to offer, and I’m sure the other groups were all offering Party-approved programming, but even so it sounds like there [edit to correct grammar] was or is a pretty good mix of entertainment on offer.
*民族舞蹈 doesn’t translate easily. 舞蹈 is dance, simple. 民族 is ethnic group or nation (in the ethno/cultural sense, not in the political nation-state sense). It’s not clear if the ethnic dance in question is purely Han or some mixture of Han and China’s ethnic minorities, especially considering the troupe in question is from Sichuan, in the southwest, which is fairly ethnically diverse, including large numbers of Tibetans and related ethnic minorities.

NZ Time is already there and already there and posting pics on Weibo. Looks like a Beijing-style temple fair, but warm.

Hard to judge from here, they were quite (light) rocky though...

Grand Fireworks Finale, Lantern Festival.
Seen through a curtain of lights, nearly directly below the Sky Tower. Of the 20 shots of the fireworks I took, only this one worked. So stoked that it was the actual finale. I wasn't quite in place when the display started, only halfway up Wellesley St on my bike. Basically, all the traffic stopped, everyone got out of their cars, and everyone just stared upward at the display. It was a pretty cool moment.
-
OK, this one is kind of interesting, mostly on account of the curious hand movement. I had just jumped off my bike, after riding hard up Wellesley St. The show began before I was ready, dammit! Anyhoo, I think it's likely that the lines that look a little like a pulse scan are, in fact, exactly that! My heart was absolutely pounding, so the little bounce is most likely, IMHO, to be a heartbeat translating through my hands.

Grand Fireworks Finale
Like 'em Ben : ) Did they not have any going off over Albert Park? They sounded pretty impressive, with a nice percussive burst at the end. I reckon shaky firework pics are more interesting than nice crisp ones...

Apparently not, which is why I headed over towards Sky Tower. But I left it a little late (hadn't factored in the dick-around-getting-onto-the-bike variable), and didn't really get to pick the best spot. But I was stoked about the final shot, especially since the fireworks mode on the camera doesn't just let you point and shoot, it's quite sensitive to you being steady and it getting focus.

and a predator guarding my basil
I am 3rd day into nursing my very itchy wasp sting.
Ok, ok, I may have startled it , but had it not bit me, the lil’ mofo would still be alive!
I now have a hole in my middle finger (which, incidentally looks about to burst) :)Lots of great photos as usual guys. Not able to get to Lil’ lappy and really my photos are of a house so not worth contributing . I’ll leave that to the builder if he gets a chance.
This photo is an old one of a wasp that I had no problems with. I suspect it lives on.
