Here is a holiday snap from my 13 year old daughter, who has just returned from a Royal Society Travel award trip she won.

I got the impression the Dragon Fly here knew his year was coming. Here is a "take the photo already" shot . Either that or he was tired of performing for me.

Thought the couch conveyed this also. Everything being a tad odd.

Wonderful shot Sofie. Should any stray scarfies happen to visit Kaitaia, the sight of that couch would have them slavering with frustrated lust.

Now what is it about the couch. My Dune din friend (up for the BDO) showed me a photo of her and mates at some folk hip music festival on NYE where they chose a paddock to pitch their tents. Well, there's a fucking great leather couch at the camp site! These peeps are in their 40's.

I'd assumed that the scarfie penchant for torching sofas was a kind of youthful ritual rejection of middle class values. Seems that it may be more deeply rooted in the collective subconscious than I'd guessed. Anyway I wouldn't want to be downwind of a burning leather one.

  • Chris Waugh, in reply to JacksonP,

Happy New Year (I know how to say it in Mandarin, but not write it)

Taking a break from a translation job to translate: 新年快乐, if you were wondering how to write it. Dragon is 龙, so Dragon Year is 龙年. Those are all simplified characters, so friends from Hong Kong or Taiwan might disagree.

Somebody else'll have to supply any firework photos, I'll be too busy lighting them, being the only one in the family dumb enough to get close to explosives of doubtful provenance with a naked flame.

They didn't burn it. I think it was they like to cart them around for comfort of camping. Extremely middle class camping too, and I bet a few of them were at O Uni. I got the impression it helped to be middle class if you studied there anyway. ;)

That is an amazing shot, and what an incredible thing for a 13 year old to experience. Getting a sense of the scale of things at such an early age can only be good. Where do we sign our three up?

    Dragon Year

isn't it more specifically the Year of the Black Dragon?
or more ominously the 'Black Water Dragon'!!
    a mercenary year to come?
    unpredictable at least...

The truly cultivated would be found in tents of intelligent design.

As opposed to 'pup tents', which would be restricted to those who have gone to the dogs.

All I know is that, starting my second Dragon Year in China, I've now gone through the full cycle of the animals. I have no idea what element it's supposed to be, I've heard Water, I've also heard Metal - but then again, this wouldn't be the first time in recent years people have apparently decided to ignore the calendar in favour of a better sounding element.
