Late night session (of course) at Avenue Cinema, Riccarton, Chchch - the perennially paired Polanski double bill Cul de sac and Repulsion - Catherine Deneuve, has just left the dead bunny on the kitchen bench and is in the bedroom (or was it a bathroom), she casually swings a mirrored door shut, and you catch a glimpse of someone standing behind her - everyone in theatre leaps in their seat, sharp intakes of breath, pulse races and never really slows again - welcome to deep disturbia...

The cinema in Papanui was the Barclay - it was also my childhood haunt. The building was pulled down close to 20 years ago (when they changed Papanui roundabout into traffic lights the road somehow took up more space) - and the site is now a small park.

Geoff, I don't see the Theatre Royal in Raetihi on your site. It it's closed, it must only be a few years ago as they were still running a film festival in 2008.

The Victoria re-opened late last year, as the fourth screen of the Lido, but closed again in May 2012. I thik it remains closed, unless I am mistaken.

Geoff---if you follow that link in my post above it does seem to be on again. Weekends only--but there! The website was updated today And I noticed a "we are open" sign this morning (getting the bike repaired at VeloEspresso :-) )

Still going. The only cinema where I encountered any difficulties--the manager was strangely relectant to let me inside.

None of you young whippersnappers remember the Rex in Riccarton Road, or the incredibly run-down Embassy in the Square, or its neighbour the Crystal Palace, where I witnessed my first Teddy Boy riot just after the showing of 'Six Five Special'?

On a more recent note, the opening, brief flourishing and then closing of the original Light House in Miro Street, Upper Hutt deserves a mention. Its progeny in Petone, Island Bay and Pauatanui live on, but thyre not the same as the original... -

Richard (forget last name) who runs the Lido in Manukau Rd, did try to do something with the Crystal Palace in about 2006 or so. I became involved because I was on the Eden Albert Community Board at the time, and Richard was interested in taking over the lease for the theatre, re-opening it and running it along the same lines as the Lido, but was faced with an inane demand by the Resource Consent planners to provide something like 200 car parks as part of the Resource Consent to re-open. Totally absurd if you know the area, and totally absurd in general reflecting a stupid, moronic, mediocre and pathetic mindset developed during the 90s that cars were the answer to everything.
I lent my support to Richard, who also tried to enlist the support of then mayor Banks, but all to no avail, and even though both Banksie and I both emailed / talked to the responsible officers. Predictably Richard moved down the road to an existing cinema, the one on Balmoral Rd (forget it's name), where it already had a resource consent.
So the Crystal is still there, mouldering, for want of 200 or so carparks.

That would be about the time I was starting my life in China. I certainly don’t remember a Rialto when I lived in Dunedin. Where is it? That doorway looks both impressive and a little familiar.

Just reading a story about the BFI's restoration of nine of Hitchcock's silent features (there were 10 but one has been lost forever) in the latest Sight & Sound. So, really looking forward to seeing Blackmail in the Civic tomorrow--the very best place to see a film such as this,
The August Sight & Sound aso has a tribute to Hitch from Guillermo del Toro, with lines like "I'm 47 years old now, and every day when I go into the shower and turn on the tap, I think of Psycho" -
The Regent in Hamilton was the most god-awful fleapit in my day. I remember taking a date to a movie, we had front row seats (in the balcony as the ground floor was closed presumably because it was a cess-pit) and the manager getting quite shirty when we pointed out the seats were so low she couldn't see the screen.
My favourite though would have to be from the old country - the Hippodrome in Wrexham, the first cinema I was allowed to go to without grown-up supervision. No sweet shop inside, we literally queued round the block to get in. But there's no cinema like a Welsh cinema full of kids - they boo the baddy and cheer the goody no matter what. Star Wars has never been the same since.

I have many childhood memories of seeing films at the Carlton cinema in Hamilton. Pretty sure that's where I saw Star Wars in '78 or so. When it was eventually taken over by a church in the 90's, they threw out all the old equipment from the projection room. Fortunately my boss at the time retrieved it, kept the 50's surround sound system and gave me the three Westrex/McIntosh tube amps. I still need to do them up but they should sound pretty good as the front channels of a home theatre one day!
