The Adults.
Would have liked to have Shihad there, as many have said, but it was good to see these kiwi icons on stage at the last BDO.
I thought their closing song, 'Please Wake Up' was really brilliant. Julia Deans brought a real intensity to it. Also -- awesome red dress. She does have the best frocks.

A little bit of Royksopp, who were a lot more of a party act than I expected:
-
Pilfered from the Facebook page of Fletch and Vaughan, who caption it as:
“BDO 2007 at 1pm vs 2012 BDO at 1pm… WHoasers… Thanks to Brook Miller for the photo comparison!” -
More Royksopp ...

The thing was, the small crowd was awesome.
After all these years, being able to just bowl up to the food and drink stalls, and not queue for the toilet was such a pleasure. The mobile networks seemed to have been provisioned for a much bigger crowd and it was no bother to get anywhere.
The change in site design was like a glimpse at an alternative history. The weather was such that the tentless Boiler Room stage was wonderful, especially later on, when lots of people sat (or lay) down on the grassy slope and enjoyed the sights and sounds.
And having a half an hour of chillout music between bands on the Converse stage was glorious: old soul after UMO, Daphne Walker later on, then Nick Cave’s ‘Wonderful Life’ before the Adults. It would have been a disaster on a damp day, but it was great yesterday.
I suspect the upper section of the site -- the Boiler Room and the Converse stage -- was what any replacement is going to look like. The stadium, not so much.

Yeah, it was good from a punters point of view, but I guess some of the sellers might have overstocked a little.
And they had 30,000 Cornettos to give away!! Hope they feel that was worthwhile marketing. Certainly gave the cleaners something to do I would imagine.

Main Stadium in 2008.
Looking at the 2008 lineup, with the exception on my part of Arcade Fire, nothing really grabbed me on the two main stages, as was the case on Friday. And yet the stadium was full.
I'm guessing, both by the low numbers, and the willingness of everyone to turn their back on it all and move on, that most were a bit over it. If you asked me after last year's, I'd probably have agreed. Still, seems a genuine shame we can't expect anything of this magnitude again any time soon.
Enigmatic Streets©
There was no enigma. They were like right there in front of you, all bloody day. I feel it a moral victory that I had only one.

Jos,
I was there in 2000, using a Sony Mavica digital camera, I got 10 shots on a floppy disc!
I shall attempt to find them.. -

Cool Jos. We seem to be starting a painted people theme. Have to keep digging.

I must confess to having been at only one BDO, in 2010 when I was playing with Batucada Sound Machine on the Local Produce stage. My day (and gig) was somewhat tainted by an impending 'meeting' with the manager and the band leader to 'discuss the lineup' (i.e. band's too big, how about you quit?). Added to that, I don't really like crowds. I took some photos though, and this one sums up how I was feeling on that day.

Rage Against the Machine and Bjork were also on the main stages that year, although the Rage fans didn't have a lot of patience for Icelandic pixies.

Great photo Carol. I was messing with time delays on Friday too. Anymore would be welcomed. ;-)

Yes, by that stage in her career, neither did I.

Great taste, Jackson. Arcade Fire were the only reason I was there too,

Aw, c'mon, the pair of you. LCD Soundsystem played.

Ha! Yes they did. In that old boiler room thing, which, to my own surprise, I missed a bit on Friday.
Back to Röyksopp, there was definitely a moment or two when I went; 'Oh right, they do that song'.

Isn't the whole point that there are frigging hundreds of you?
