Had a walk round Mauao yesterday - birds washing in a bit of a rocky stream (tui and yellowhammers mostly); rabbits twitching their ears in the sunlight; a Danish-flagged log ship passing by on its way to goodness knows where, so close we thought we could touch it - and later the yellow Pilot Boat doing a U-turn beside it (with Mayor Island as a backdrop) and heading back in; pohutukawa coming out and such a deep red they took our breath away; Nippers on the beach doing their training; and these clouds. Thanks to my son, HF, for the pic.

Well played! totally got my morning off to a smiling start- now about to finish my porridge, and head of to a chilly university oval with our daughter to watch some cricket.

Dunedin weather always gives a sense of place- climate can become do much a part of who we are. Two photos here showing how it can be in Otepoti within minutes. The first I had sent to my brother in the uk (and then deleted to save space, hence now a screenshot). His response was looked like a beautiful day. The second was ten minutes later

Home is where the honey is … we’re renting a beehive and the beekeeper turned up yesterday to harvest our first crop. Husband was hands on and I was the photographer (and Alan is the one directing operations and who actually knows what he’s doing).
The photo of the jars shows most of the end product (there are a few random glass jars filled now too) – we ended up with 10kg of spring on our bench!

I’ve been looking for this for a while: Greg up on top of the Port Hills in midsummer 2008, picking his way down the treacherous rocky hillside in Victoria Park.
This is home: the place where my people have stood, the place where my Great-Uncle Huia Gilpin and his mates in the Summit Road Society started replanting the gold-grass hills with natives after the War.
At Uncle Huia’’s funeral, packed with people respecting his decades as director of park and reserves, one of his friends stood up: “Not many people know,” he said solemnly, “that Huia was the honorary president of the Victoria Park chapter of Black Power.”
Hundreds of well-bred jaws hit the chapel floor, before he explained that Huia Gilpin via his Christchurch City Council post pioneered employing gangs in the PEP work schemes promoted by PM Robert Muldoon in the late 1970s. The gang employees gave Uncle Huia the presidential title out of respect.
So I’m proud of that, and the Hills are always my lodestar. I see Sugarloaf when I near the city, and I know I am home.
