Great places, great pics.
Home is always in my garden.
All through this winter I've been deconstructing and reconstructing the idea of home, as in roots, family, where I've come from. Parsley was abundant in the garden all winter - what a great excuse for parsley sauce as comfort food.

I love how living by the beach I see it in many sorts of weather. We get some good storms.

Sadly, since the floods last June, the beach has been massively eroded, and the dunes are disappearing. It's one thing to know that storms will become more frequent and sea-level will rise, it's another to see it happening so rapidly.
Before June there was a beach path here, through dunes.

This is one of my favourite paths, and it used to curve softly out through marram grass and down to the beach. Now it just stops.

These big taupata trees have been here a long time. They are less than 3m from the edge. In very stormy weather, the sea has been up here.

Lilith, that bunch of daffodils is the best.
I am feeling at home with the Earth again, and starting to return to gardening. Greg has been working in it constantly, and most of the lushness this year is due to him. The cornflowers self-seeded from my planting last year, like a lot of happenings this year. And the photo is special: the first one I took and loaded into the new system I am learning.

I grew up on this dock in the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. I love how the grey heron looks the plastic owl square in the eye. That owl has been there long as I remember.

I didn’t quite know how to approach this topic, but I thought, well, maybe different understandings of place.
So, starting with … places I go that feel familiar and good.
Point Chev beach, where Sir Keith Sinclair played as a child.
Our little pocket of harbour, where a whale stranded this year and it felt very close to home.
And Splore, where everyone is lovely and going back to the city hurts every time.

Kedron - I would guess that Lillith's shots were taken at Brighton, south of Dunedin. The headland in the far distance in the "sun on the water" shot is Blackhead, which has been destroyed by quarrying. I have a picture of it taken in the early 1970s.

Well, spotted, John. :-) Yes, poor old Blackhead. They’re still quarrying it.
I always want to write Black Head, but Blackhead is correct. And it's not a beauty spot.

Hebe - one way to keep detail in the trees, and not burn out the background, is to use HDR mode, if your camera has it. The camera needs to be on a tripod for this.

A couple of other options that might work-
If you camera can be set to take the light reading only from the central zone, you make that the bit of the picture you want to optimise on.
If your camera displays the light histogram, put that on and play with manual settings to shape the light and dark.
