I struggle to see how that would be a worse parliament than what we got. Even people I disapprove of deserve representation… and that “have to get a full quota” idea is just silly.
Albeit I don’t know off the top of my head how fractional MPs get rounded (hopefully they’re not truncated!) but luckily The Spinoff explain it. Why should 1-seat parties not just get dealt with the same as everyone else, and when they get right to the end chances are some party with slightly less than 1/120th of the vote will get one MP.
That wasted vote bothers me a lot more than any wittering about microparties.

To an entity that measures value in money, the most certain way to get an injustice righted is to cost the perpetrator money. Since government does that…
The proposal would definitely reduce the injustice imposed by the legal system. At times it is quite random in who gets picked up and prosecuted erroneously, but more often there’s a systematic side. Specifically, being poor is a major factor. Which means that any compensation based on actual costs could well exacerbate that bias.
If the police have the option of arresting and holding a Professor of Laws or some unemployed wretch, I would expect their calculations of risk to be heavily biased towards letting the professor go while imprisoning the wretch.
And just wait for the right(eous) to point out that being fed and housed by the state benefits the wretch…

My ex informs me that buses and trains now have dots on some seats with “sit here” text. I got a photo with “I told you you’re not supposed to sit on the floor, but would you listen?”

I couldn't see any relationship between your communist comment and the tweet after the colon. But ok.
I've recently been bingeing "not just bikes" on youtube, so comparing the Amsterdam focus on street design to keep people safe to the Auckland focus on keeping cars fast is a bit of a shock. The platitudes from Auckland Transport PR especially. From the talk you'd think they'd used the lockdown to glue temporary speed humps down all over the place, rather than just painting dots on footpaths.
Mind you here in Sydney nothing has been done at all to roads, the best we've got is keeping the trains running (presumably also buses etc, but since I've mostly stayed home except for early morning bike rides I don't know). There's been no media coverage that I've seen, of any changes.

Sorry to hear about your mum.
One thing I've noticed on Sydney trains is people spacing out more than I expected, to the extent of seeing people walking along the platform to enter via a door to an unoccupied carriage if the train seems empty-ish (which they mostly are). I had a whole carriage to myself on Sunday in the middle of the day.
Meanwhile the roads here seem as full as they ever were.

I think so, especially given that the Iranians seem to have decided the same. Obviously their ability to conduct trials outside Iran is limited by the war, but that's no reason we shouldn't carry out our own trials.

That sounds like excellent news, especially the manufacturing ability we already have and thus the price... assuming the trials work out.
One can only imagine how this will play out politically.
