Aw, thanks Craig, for your very kind words. I have been stuck in Melbourne (damn you ash cloud!), away from Chch and my frightened kiddies, and it's nice to read this at the end of an otherwise total shitter of a week.

I don't know if anyone knows this, but new books at Borders and Whitcoulls, unless they're on the sale tables, are often 10% more expensive than other shops. eg my last novel was supposed to be $37, but at Whitcoulls & Borders was a whopping $41.

Hard News: I'm not a "f***ing cyclist".…, in reply to
Not sure what it's like in Auckland or wherever, but here in Christchurch, cars park on the cycle lane. It infuriates me the way some drivers down here think that a single lane + a cycle lane = two lanes when approaching intersections and I frequently have to get off my bike and go up on the footpath to get around the cars waiting at the lights (during rush hour this is often 50 metres from the lights).

50% of your marketing works apparently, just no one knows which half that is.
I'd heard it was more like 10%. When I was selling ads at b (waaay before ratings and we had our own way of selling around them) I used to tell people "they say only 10% of advertising works. If we knew which 10% we'd all be rich."
Funny - I used to sell ads at b with no ratings and at Pavement with no auditing. And did just fine.

Thanks Rob!

I'll amend that. It's not non-existent. The ideas are still ticking over and sometimes words make it onto the screen or page. I'll change it to 'slowly'.

Ha! Non-existent at the moment due to the baby that popped out just after the last novel was finished. Two kids. Tired. Writing on hold. Not for long I hope. Thanks for asking!

...mainly by people that had little or no connection to the Dunedin scene at that time
How incredibly patronising, Grant! Philip has stated it exactly as it was, that I played "for a time" (and yes, recorded, but with your connections you'd know that), which pretty much sums up my entire patchwork musical background. Everything was just for a time. And a lovely time it was. It only ever gets mentioned as a curiosity. You can relax now.

Late to the party as usual.
The Little Stranger = my best book of the last two years at least. It has everything that I look for in a good book, and deals with some current obsessions (spooky old houses, uncertainties).

I do have one LUQ, which is why was he in such a hurry to write this novel? Four months for research and first draft! A few more to finish! What's the hurry? Maybe I'll ask him myself one day...
