  • Hard News: The Music for Occasions, in reply to Dan Slevin,

I considered having 'In the Mood' by Glenn Miller played at my father's funeral, but in the end chose Johnny Cash for carrying out the coffin. Hardly a dry eye..

I'm pretty sure there is not. During my first year at Unitec (a decade ago), the students here were taught Ciba printing, but it became obsolete shortly after, as the chemicals and paper became harder and harder to source.

The first color printing I ever did took place in a friend's (literal) broom cupboard in Peckham, where he had a Ciba process set up. Beautiful prints, I agree.

Yes. It is not even _possible_ to produce an 'analogue' colour print here in New Zealand any more. And I have been buying my film from the US for quite a few years now. Seemed crazy to begin with, but has become normal now.

  • Capture: Capture One,

    Great.

Those “Vinyl Records Are Coming Back” stories that keep appearing everywhere? Look out for “Film Is Making A Comeback” stories. They won’t be far away.

I work in the photography department at Unitec and film is making a comeback. The tumbleweed has stopped rolling through the darkrooms, and students are coming brandishing their old Nikons and Mamiyas bought from Ebay and Trade Me. The students say they are getting bored with film.

  • Hard News: Friday Fever, in reply to Robyn Gallagher,

There's ample footage of 1986 Auckland, a year before the crash. Back then the city was golden and full of dreams.

Omg I can't watch it. I moved to Dunedin from Auckland in 1984 to get away from the agressive upward mobility that was going on then.

  • Hard News: Fridays are still for the music,

The appearance this week of the first track from Jon Toogood’s new solo project, The Adults, took me by surprise. I had no idea such a thing existed – let alone that it included Ladi 6, Shayne Carter, Gary Sullivan and Tiki Taane, all on one track.

Shayne P Carter is playing old stuff at the King's Arms mid-May. Looking forward to it already. 'Big Fat Elvis' anyone?
