I was going to add to the experiences that women here have shared of being harassed at gigs for the past 20+ years, but after this comment I'm not sure I should bother:
I’m kind of annoyed at being told it has always been thus, because I genuinely don’t think it has.
Honestly. We're not trying to annoy anyone and we're not lying about this. This has been going on for a long time. Now it needs to stop, and blaming the youths or the bros or gigs these days isn't part of this process. Listening to women is.

Teething problems were inevitable and I am sure the BDO will grow into the new venue. Mobility between areas and queues were a nightmare at the first few BDOs I went to at Mt Smart, but by the last few it was a well oiled machine (not even including the last one that no one, including me, went to). I hope they persevere with Western Springs, it sounds like it was a delightful venue. But I really really don't want to queue 2 hours for the loo!
(Full disclosure: I did not attend the BDO this year due to illness, and I'm a little bit glad that Blur cancelled because it meant I could get a refund on my ticket and also I didn't miss Blur. Next year though!)

I have a feeling we may find out that formal complaints were not exactly encouraged.
I know a woman who wanted to make a formal rape complaint to the police but when she went to the police station they told her not to because she was "just drunk." I expect that something similar happened here.

Hard News: Narcissists and bullies, in reply to
Mr Hattie received an unspecified disciplinary "outcome" and has since been promoted as head of the Auckland CIB's serious crime unit.
Terrifying.
Thank you for the info. From the oath it sounds to me as if the police should have been working to "keep the peace and prevent offences against the peace" by making more of an effort to minimise the amount of rapes that occurred, not waiting and seeing until they could get a better conviction.

This is the other thing that is getting to me about this case: if the police had been monitoring them, did they do anything to try to stop anyone else from being assaulted? Even just letting the group know that the police are aware of what they are doing may have made them stop. A short sentance for a more minor conviction is a better outcome than more people being raped.
Are there rules about the police having reason to believe that a person is going to harm someone and not stopping it?
I haven't read every article about this case, so maybe I am way off base; but it sounds as if the police were "monitoring the situation" while letting the actual rapes continue.

I genuinely don’t understand why no charges can be laid unless a victim makes a complaint. Is this specific to rape? Obviously it cannot apply to murder charges, and I assume that most drug busts are not the result of a victim complaining about drugs to the police. Also, if a police officer sees someone smashing a shop window, do they let them carry on unless someone formally reports it?*
*Please note: these examples are NOT analogies to rape – they are just crimes I thought of off the top of my head where the police might press charges without a victim’s complaint.

Hard News: The non-binary council, in reply to
That was the point I was trying to illustrate (poorly I guess, my apologies!). Why base his resignation on one poll and not the other? Because we shouldn't be basing anything on these silly polls at all.
I find it interesting that Herald readers think Len Brown should go, but Stuff readers think he should stay; but that is merely a curiousity, nothing which any real world decisions should be based on.

Their insistence that he should resign based on an online poll on their website
But the poll on Stuff says he should not resign! Now what?!

Thank you for this Emma, it is so important. I read about ring theory earlier this year while I was being the good friend and found it immensely helpful. This feels like great advice and I will sadly probably be revisiting this coloumn for reminders.
Anyway. Thank you. A Lot.

I keep telling myself I will never go to Vector again, because of the sound, bar, and general unpleasantness; but what's one to do when it's the only way to see New Order, Radiohead, etc?
I loved the New Order show, but was horrified when I went to get a beer and the cup wasn't big enough so I had to stand at the bar and chug the 1/3 of the bottle that didn't fit in the cup. Was that happening all night, or did I go at an unfortunate time between cup supplies?
