RB,
I agree Cowan’s recidivism is relevant, but I also wonder if that means he’s a marked man. I guess it’s hard to take a firm stand on it when, once again, we don’t know all the details. But I certainly found the “He’s a role model to kids” (at 4a.m.; really?) speech from the arresting officer in Invercargill pretty hard to stomach.

Not sure about the Carter comment.
Following is lame exit from a certain game in Cardiff last year I seem to recall the odd talk-back caller going on about how he spent too much time in front of the mirror as a cause.
Cowan’s just behaving like most 25 year-old Southland men. He is not a role model, and neither should he be.

I’d have thought the happiest country in the world would be the one that doesn’t bother itself with these infuriating surveys…

Paul, I actually think he knows his sport OK (better than Lose for example)
But it’s when he tries to be funny, like the repetitive Parnell “jokes” that I change to Rhema or something.
And the incessant “PC Brigade / rope sandal wearers / tree-hugger comments are inane beyond belief.

Or he’d be a Wellington City Councillor with a Sunday morning sports show where he makes silly homophobic jokes about Parnell in the weather forecast.
Except Boycott’s funnier than that.

Simon G,
From reading a bit on the Guardian blogs over the last 24 hours, one of the main reasons English are condemning Collingwood is that they perceive themselves as the Moral Guardians of the Spirit of the Game. They’ve obviously got over Bodyline.
As for the Styris sun-out; are you being serious? There were always 2 runs there, and Styris never stretched out.
Whether he’s capable of stretching out might be a moot point though I guess.

The only thing that is not intent is stoppages for things like ball changes / injuries / changing sightscreens / spanking streakers etc, and that time is taken off now. The rest is up to pure time management; there’s enough time to get through the overs.
There was more than the name-calling during the Soap Opera. There were people getting upset that Michael Clarke, for example, was lying about claiming catches.

Professional cricket has less and less room for the notion of "the spirit of the game". If there were any spirit in the game then people would be motivated by it. Instead the only motivation left is what can be gained for oneself. The spirit of the game is constantly being legislated away
Yes and no. Most of the game’s dramas, like that Indian – Aus soap opera from earlier in the year, are all about the spirit of the game.
BTW, I think slow over-rates are a genuine blight on the game, in all forms.I’m not disagreeing with you re Vettori though.

Emma; first of all Sidebottom did nothing wrong; it was an accident. The issue is whether KP should’ve then run him out, and whether Collingwood should have gone through with the appeal. In the past even Brett Lee has refused to run someone out after a collision.
The Murali incident was the fielding side taking advantage of the batsman’s stupidity.
In the Elliot case it was the fielding side taking advantage of an unfortunate accident.
A subtle distinction, perhaps, but in the unwritten spirit of the game, it’s a significant one.
Where NZ lost the moral high ground, however, was in the embarrassingly petulant display on the balcony.
RI, Dillaglio didn’t knee Lomu; he was looking for cocaine. :)

Ah, I get you now HG.
I’d say he’s just got a good idea of what your average Daily Telegraph reader would lap up.
