  • Discussion: Regarding Auckland,

Given it's a SuperCity, with a SuperMayor, I have recommended this guy elsewhere...

  • Discussion: Regarding Auckland,

It could also do some good IT advice, what with the proposed move to '1 IT data system' for the entire region and all.

Well apparently there is only 8 'IT data systems' across all of Auckland already. Them councils have got pretty nifty Enterprise Architects by the sound of it.
    </sarcasm> (Thanks Emma)

The unification of those will not be done prior to establishment I wager. Not even tried.

  • Legal Beagle: Three strikes (w/ updates),

Knowing this, Act tightened the criteria to a group of the more serious offences like rape, murder, aggravated assault - but did not get Corrections to adjust the "78 killers" figure. Act has just kept using it, without any qualification.

    Did they, though?
Because they were quite right to campaign that way - the law they wanted would have played out like that. If they have used the 78 number SINCE making the changes then that's obviously dishonest but it's not a number I've seen bandied about since the campaign?

So nobody wants ACT's bill because it's so extreme, and the rewrite would have ZERO impact on stopping killers. So why exactly are we trampling the BORA again? Just for good times fun?

Red, I'd love either of those two (or perhaps a double ticket as the Mayor gets to appoint the Deputy - or is this only from elected councillors?) but don't know if they have the name recognition or appeal outside the CBD, fringe?

If Alex reads this and wants to make a tilt - I'd love to help out on the campaign. Drop me an email if you'd like.

The 17,000 figure is likely Harbourside (4k)

It's a great restaurant and an icon for Auckland, but I'm not sure it should have it's own Local Board. Banks would probably make it the Mayoral Canteen though.

All written materials say that local bodies can ask the Auckland Council to raise local rates for local initiatives - it is clear that the rate will be decided at the Council level, not by the local bodies.

Thanks Tass - that's interesting, so we'll get one rates bill but it will still be split between "Auckland Council" rates and "Western Bays Local Board" rates?

Banks will have real trouble with Rodney, Franklin, South Auckland etc I would have thought. It will be tough for a candidate to appeal across the whole region though, so I wouldn't be surprised if we get someone who just focuses on the big constituencies given the FPP stylez. Unfortunately I can see the big CBD/waterfront projects being actively talked down to stop the North Shore and South Auckland crowds accusing the mayoral hopeful of just being a slick city boy.

Sorry to keep barging in here, but SuperCity is something I'm really interested in.

Herald reports that Key "said local bodies will have the power to raise rates to fund local initiatives"
Ya whaaaaa? Really? Cause that goes against everything you say about one rates bill and a uniform rating system?

In fact, based on Roger's analysis of 9 Local Boards within existing Auckland City boundaries, you're basically talking the community boards, of which there are 10. Looks like their population coverage varies quite a bit though (30-odd to 70-odd thousand)

  • Hard News: The Cullen investment,

Maybe CBD+Parnell or +Ponsonby? Or is "CBD" being defined as encompassing College Hill and bits of Newton? Say, Grafton Gully/Ponsonby ridge/waterfront/Newton Rd?

Hobson Community Board is about 50k people, and is CBD plus eastern-bits. Out to Epsom/Remuera.
