Hard News: Political Idol, or whatever…, in reply to
But for that very reason I tend to agree with Craig. I’d be much more interested in an approach to an unpopular policy or piece of legislation that clearly communicated to lay-people the ‘why it sucks’, and ‘how it can be improved’, rather than the blunt instrument of (short-hand) of ‘fuck-em’ to big-business.
Step 1: Goto Scoop.co.nz
Step 2: Read the near-incessant feed of Green Party media releases that do exactly that.
Seems to be working for the 10-15% of potential voters. -
Hard News: Political Idol, or whatever…, in reply to
They have been National in drag for a long time from where I’m sitting.
This is true while they were in power. Since then, however, they've been all over the Green Party website mashing Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V, so I'm going to give them benefit of:
a) the doubt
b) the Green ministers holding them to account around the cabinet table.I've met Cunliffe, liked him and I think he's a clear thinker, so I'd like to see him have a go at leading Labour. Of the three I think he has the best credentials for the job, and I like that he is prepared to raise taxes.

Hard News: Kitchen Hacks, in reply to
Mortar & pestle, the bigger the better for dealing to the coffee beans. Just keep bashing until you get the granularity you are after (might be a while to get to espresso size, though, quicker if you are only making plunger grinds).

Instant Office Chili Sensation Hack: I like this one when I'm hungry or cold in the office. Make a mug of miso soup and add a small dollop of Lee Kum Kee's Chiu Chow Chili Oil. Instant salty chili deliciousness!
Actually, CCCO is easily my favorite condiment, it goes with almost *everything* savoury.

My favourite kitchen hack is to use our open fire as a winter barbecue. Let the coals burn down and then you have a great source of heat for grilling. And there are no lingering odours because they simply go up the chimney.
I often a cook butterflied leg of lamb with Moroccan-style rub to perfection, and find that I bbq over coals more in winter than I do in summer.

Up Front: An Open Letter to the Labour…, in reply to
No particular knowledge, but we stood Jan Logie in the Mana by-election back in 2010, so I’d expect the Greens to stand someone in Christchurch East.
My money would be on Mojo Mathers standing, purely because she stood there in the 2011 election (not that this grants her a right to the seat or anything, the local electorate still get to decide who will represent them).
I don’t think there will be an expectation that the Greens would win the seat, but it is an excellent opportunity to put forward the Green kaupapapa.
One interesting note about Cosgrove – he got ~16k electorate votes in 2011, but Labour only got around half that, and it appears ~4k voters were National supporters who preferred him to their own candidate (Kate Wilkson). Is someone who appears to have popularity with National voters really a potential candidate for Christchurch East ?

Excellent work, Keith.
I think the is easy/isn't easy debate is unnecessary. I agree with Craig and Deborah - it would not have been easy for them to get the data. You'd need to have understanding of the directory structures that are shown to you, and be able to guess which ones had the data you were interested in. That's a world a way from Clippy chiming in with "You look like you are downloading secret documents, would you like some help with that ?"
This doesn't make John Key's statements true, however. It would have been easy for someone interested in accessing the private data.
I'm an IT professional and I'm appalled at this lack of security, especially since the issue was raise on a number of occasions. I would like to see some accountability, starting with Bennett's resignation, but I don't expect Key do more than blame the IT contractors who installed the kiosks.

My advice to the BoTs would be to either a) photocopy as poorly as they can the relevant sections from the return to BoT and snail mail to Fairfax on the the 19th day and advise said Mr H that the info is in the mail.
And my advice would be to get the school's students to transcribe the data by hand. And assume it is transcribed correctly and then send it as is.
Also, I wonder how all the bilingual schools are getting on, Ministry didn't provide national standards for bilingual education, and they had to make them up.

Legal Beagle: MMP Review - The Proposals, in reply to
You have misunderstood it.
Thanks for clearing that up, I/S.
The Maori Party don’t make any serious effort to seek list votes. While this is their right (and I don’t think Pakeha and others have any standing to interfere with the disposition of the Maori seats) it does have a (slight) distorting effect.
IMO they were actually campaigning pretty hard to get party votes, and I stood against Dr Sharples in Tamaki Makaurau. Sure, they didn’t get traction (during the campaign, I pointed out, repeatedly, that the Maori Party have never received an extra seat from their party votes), but that was not because of lack of trying.
