I've been trying to replicate this "hack" all week using a couple of spare handsets I have lying around and failed every time. (Using my own number, obviously.)
Not saying it can't be done, but it's certainly not working for me.
Telecom's CDMA network is set up pretty much the same security standards as CDMA networks elsewhere so like it suggests in the TV3 report this would be a problem that would be international in scope if it were occurring.

As a gamer, I'm personally less concerned about the possibility of p2p applications being managed independently of other uses of bandwith (I use them a lot, but I don't care so much about getting 100% of speed with them instead of 50% speed) than I am about interleaving, which adds around 50ms latency to my games (and VoIP by the way.)
Telecom doesn't currently have an option to turn interleaving off, but Telstra apparently does.

do you remember all the BS about Karl Rove and Valerie Plame? It went on not for months, but for several years. It was all a Rovian conspiracy to punish an administration critic by outing his under cover wife, Rove was going to be frog marched out of the White House etc. etc. Turns out Richard Armitage accidentally let the name slip to Bob Novack. There was no "there" there, I mean nothing, nada, zip, it was all hype and bullshit.
Nice try, but no cigar. Valerie Plame's name was mentioned to multiple reporters by multiple members of the Administration. If that's your idea of a slip of the tongue, you should be protesting on the streets about how massively incompetent the Administration is to make the same mistake over and over.
Do you not even remember Judith Miller spending time in jail for not revealing her source was Cheney's Chief of Staff, Scooter Libby? And she was given that info before Armitage spoke to Nokav.
But by all means, keep going. At this rate you'll be doing Colbert's "We never actually invaded Iraq" routine in no time.

TPM made the good point that its actually risky for the Allen campaign to ask for a recount. The FBI is already invesigating alleged voter fraud on their part, and stretching out the electoral process for another week or two will draw further attention to it.
They're not going to get the option to refuse though, are they? I thought if it was within 0.5% it's an automatic recount.

I quite. I not going to vote again. It's time I gave up on this political bullshiat. I just hope the nuke attack comes soon. Let it be on the East Coast where it belongs.
I think this demostrates pretty clearly that voting should be a privilege, NOT a right.

There's been a general trend in call centres towards a reduction in staff skill and knowledge, but it's particularly obvious in ISP tech support lines. Partially that's to do with countering customer complaints about the time you need to wait for someone to answer the phone: you need more people, which means you want to pay them less, and spend less time training them.
Partially it's also to do with increased staff turnover in many of these jobs. No matter how good your training, you'll still end up taking several calls a day completely outside your experience, so it takes time online to develop a decent wealth of experience to draw from in these situations.
And at least part of it is simply managerial incompetence: managers focus their training and quality assessment on "people skills" like emapthy and active listening, not realising that those skills are worthless when the person taking the call doesn't have a clue what they're talking about.

I'm wondering what the overall effect of the election will be on the world economy, since that's where things will really impact on me personally.
Predictions for a Dem majority?
It seems from my (admittedly vastly ignorant) point of view that presidents from one party contending with Houses and Senates of the other party result in a stasis of policy that tends to create a positive economic environment, at least whith everything else being equal.

Or are you using the word "left" in the "not sufficiently committed to bringing about the end of the world" sense?
Her voting record shows her as a moderate, even slightly conservative versus politicians here. Her positions on specific policies have changed over time, but that's what happens to any reasonable politician's policies at the world (and their voters' interests) changes. Repeating "stay the course" doesn't convert obstinancy into a virtue, you know.
