Speaker: Abortion: morality and health, in reply to
I demand a public health system (and can we also have a welfare state please).

Access: Harry Potter and the covenant of…, in reply to
My thought too. There are many contributors to this blog who have considerable interest and expertise in this area who could be nominated if we had a chance such as you and Rosemary McD (and of course RB himself) for a start.

As a result of her trip to the UN the Minister has announced a new Disability Data and Evidence Working Group. It seems that people will be selected and nominations are not being sought. http://www.odi.govt.nz/what-we-do/better-evidence/

Great to have this post from Paul and news about Robert who has featured before on Access posts. Hopefully our Minister of Disability Issues is learning a lot from them on this trip.
The latest iteration of our Human Rights Act makes Paul's job slightly more secure, unlike the Australian Disability Rights Commissioner role which was disestablished last year.

My late ex mother-in-law was a bit of a party girl in 1930s Wellington. She said (although she was careful to stress this was not a first hand account) that everyone knew where to find a local abortionist. Unfortunately the personal risk was high. She also mentioned that some of the conservative and powerful men about town were the cause.

Just a reminder that the MSD consultation on older carers of older people (whatever that means) closes on Friday. Online survey.

There are some interesting ethical issues with interventions for people in a coma. Sometimes they can give retrospective consent after they recover. So it is not just the treatment that is controversial, but also the fact that the patient is not competent to consent.
This is the sort of topic which will be discussed by ethics nerds at the upcoming Australasian Association for Bioethics and Health Law conference in Wellington.

Hard News: Dirty Politics, in reply to
Passed by a television this morning showing the Paul Henry show. A panel was dismissing not only the United Nations and all our commitments under various treaties and conventions, but human rights generally.

A comedian who uses an actual screen is Thane Pullan. I think he uses eye gaze technology and adaptive technology for his 'stand up' routine. Does a good line in disability jokes. Not on TV yet but can't be far off.

The boycott of TV3 is obviously hurting. This was just posted on Facebook - I think originally by David Farrier (from the new late show Newsworthy)
"To all those 3 News viewers who now want to boycott TV3: I can't see how killing off 3News could ever improve news and current affairs in NZ. We're all upset about Campbell Live but, remember, most of those Campbell Live people, including John, learnt their chops on 3 News. That's part of the reason why they're so good. The journalists at TV3 didn't can the programme. They are still mourning its passing. Apart from that, the boycotters missed a top class news programme tonight. The lead story was a second death in a cold, damp state house: a father of six. You wouldn't have seen that on TV One. But you'll get a full update on Newsworthy tonight. TV3's news and current affairs team has taken some huge hits. But the journalists are still chasing and delivering strong and important stories. I'm a producer on 3News and if you're a fan of our programme I urge you to support the journos, editors, camerapeople and directors and stick with or return to TV3 news and current affairs... it's actually the best thing you can do to ensure the strongest TV news and current affairs in New Zealand. At this point, a small move toward or away from us could have a big impact down the track".
