  • Hard News: Prospects,

If labour do leave I can't help seeing parables with the Democratic
    loss in 2000.

A competent fiscally conservative socially progressive government beaten by a "breath of fresh air."

  • Hard News: History is now,

"Today is the day America elects its first black President."

What about grandma passing away....only two days before her grandson rules the free world....c'mon jesus that's a bit premature.

..and it makes more of a mockery of race as an issue to see she's whiter than my late grandma.....he should wear a picture of her in replace of a flag pin.

  • Hard News: Don't bother voting,

"That reminds me of the hand-wringing post-election punditry about how 'polarised' New Zealand was."

though while we should be proud of our democracy we shouldn't be complacent about it, there's still a lot to debate about and with alan greenspan kind of leaving the church today ,how we run our economy certainly seems to have various people eyeing the polars.

  • Hard News: Through the Looking Glass,

"It's already possible for the IRD to tax gains on property speculation."

people forget the beatlemania of the housing market. It was a frenzy and was fueled by numerous "you may never ever own a house if you don't buy now" stories and people read that and think the heralds giving them a fatherly tip and investors were thinking "gold", a subservient renting market forever .

Everyone was housing, it was like that time in the 1980's when everyone had shares, when everyone dives in the pool its hard not to want to follow but after the pool is chaos it's hard not to want to have a rule about jumping into pools together.

  • Hard News: Through the Looking Glass,

'it's not about being "told how to spend your money", it's being honest with your constituents that debt relative to GDP cannot improve when people continue to live beyond their means with funds borrowed offshore"

i agree. we just don't seem to have that dialogue happening , I don't know why because if the housing market burns people its a plainly broken market that needs instant focus .

We're housing a population here, we've got multiple concerns here.

We don't communicate well on market distortions, we sit in awe and wonder at what the invisible hand is doing.....and ultimately when we do see the hand it appears its giving us the finger.

    we need smarter market information.

" It can help our stock market, but as a result of its main purpose."

I think you've nailed it there,it's purpose at the moment is slow solid growth by backing "warren buffett like" solid investing.

It takes the super out of the super fund and puts it into a more liberal investment fund which carries more risk but may finally fund your jetpack shop .

Why can't we have both again?

  • Hard News: Through the Looking Glass,

"I'm not a poll-watcher like many on here but given the huge swings we've seen in recent ones."

the polls are out again with each other which is interesting because the science is pretty straightforward

There's large deviations between companies testing the same peolpe.

what we need to know from pollsters is who are they confident of being in their initial sampling population and by definition who may have a very little chance of being polled and is there a profile there.

It's maths, it's fun , let us all join in the data reading.

"the problem has been that no-one was willing to stand up and point out that emperor needed a better tailor."

that's loyalty for you. I agree with you that many of us were waiting for a thud especially after waking up to the rock n roll economic fantasy that was enron.
