I am sure I am not alone in regarding Tony's Weekend Herald story "How I went to Australia and had some E and was really happy but was then really sad because I had no friends" as a classic of its kind.
Tony's gone to the HoS? Dear oh dear... their gain of course.

A nation needs good newspapers capable of sustaining a robust political and cultural conversation. In New Zealand there are none. You don't think it's a problem?
I agree we NEED good news reporting - but we haven't had any decent papers at all for a very, very long time and last time I looked they didn't look like they were going to be round for much longer either (prepared to be proven wrong on that one but the current models don't look very healthy do they?).
Whether the net etc will come up with working economic models to sustain good journalism is the crux of that particular chestnut. Radio's as good a source of news as the paper, and of course not 24 hours old by the time it gets out. TV news, well, I can't possibly comment (hand, feed, biting...)

Must say I find the vitriol directed at journos in general here pretty funny... I'm a journo, freelance, I work mainly in broadcasting and occasionally, for my sins, producing telly news.
Anyway it's a pretty simple formula: if you don't like something, don't watch/listen to/read it anymore.
Of course you're free to criticise. Just know that it says as much about you as it does about journalists in general. And Ranapia's right, amusing maybe but no big deal.

Oooohhhh right. Too clever for me. I assumed author meant something about Dan C. being cloned or something something. Possibly.
Well, he is making remarkable progress on his comeback... and GOD THE ALL BLACKS NEED HIM AND RICHIE. Kahui, not so much.

Pardon? As a card-carrying South Islander living in this lovely city, I beg to differ. Sea breezes and ocean views outside my front door... lots of green spaces and gorgeous parks... the odd beach even apparently. What is ugly is the Hutt Valley. Urk. Oh, and Christchurch (apart from that big park in the middle).
(I suppose there might be such a thing as a carless Aucklander, but am yet to meet one).
I don't own a car. I bike everywhere except weekend football, when I grab a lift with team mates. Dangerous, hell yes! Aucklanders are fools on the road and there are no bike lanes. But I'll not own another car until I can get a fully electric one at a decent price, thanks.
As for the topic, it's like all the fools who talked down the Wellington stadium - and the ones who keep opposing the Dunedin one.How can opening up the harbour more be anything but a great idea?
I'll miss that lovely tank farm on the evening runs though. Ah, tank farms by sunset, gorgeous...
Now, about those bike lanes over the bridge...

Like I say, ugly. But correct. I think. (The longer you look at English, the weirder it looks...)
Not sure how you'd describe that or those verb forms, any TESOL teachers out there will be able to though.
I blame the parents. Not sure if they're French, Latin or German in this case. Or Norse. English, she gets around. Very successful but hard to learn, comparitively (I only speak this tongue pas fortunately pour moi...)
