Hard News: Music: Radio is still relevant, in reply to
Yes I've enjoyed Richard Langston filling in for Chris Laidlaw who has the most amazingly soporific and yet irritating effect on me. Then I tune into the Sunday jazz show on bfm causing me to hurl the radio out the window.

May I recommend when you're done with country on a Sunday night you switch to George for The Melting Pot. Just look at that playlist. And have a listen here.
DJ is a friend of mine who likes and plays (and mixes!) all things funky, a hip hop flavour but very broad taste. Russell maybe up your alley?

Hard News: John Banks: The volunteer did…, in reply to
I hadn't yet jumped over to your post Graeme - I'm largely in agreement although possibly much less sympathetic to Banks' good name. perhaps that is because I would simply love to see him cross examined on what his knowledge actually was..
In relation to (2) I was thinking of the statement in the letter that the police "could not establish" that Banks had the necessary knowledge. I don't think they have to establish that, just that there was sufficiently decent evidence to found a charge. Perhaps this is clumsy drafting I doubt it given the ham-handed way the police have handled other policical & sensitive issues, e.g. the teapot tape charges.
-
I'm a bit less impressed than Graeme with the investigation. Basically that is because (1) I am uncomfortable with factual conclusions being confidently expressed and unqualified where the evidential basis is unclear and (2) the Police appear to have set themselves a very high threshold to lay charges.
One might humbly suggest these are matters for a Court.

Eden Park this year has worn boat shoes...
an excellent metaphor. Not true I must say for the one match I attended this year there, but then it was the Warriors not the hapless Blues.

At my dad's funeral there was a LOT of music, including a live jazz band & a full on harmonised rendition of "sunrise sunset" from fiddler on the roof (he was a king of am dram in our little town). Most fitting - and still unlistenable! was Jerusalem. It suited a heathen transplanted Englishman.
I'm going to a funeral on Friday for someone my exact age. If there is no guns n roses we will all be haunted.
Mine will include the theme from "the Snowman" just to get everyone in the (tragic) mood! -
Ha, reminds me of the Darren Hanlon song about his punk flatmate, with the deathless lyric "Punk's not dead, she's just gone to bed..."

Hard News: Some niceness is what I got ..., in reply to
Did anyone else not know that Leonard Cohen's daughter has had a baby with Rufus Wainwright? I just tripped over that fact when I read that linked Guardian article. Now that could be one talent to watch.

Hard News: The Very Worst, in reply to
A society of laws is supposed to act as a curb on the worse, most atavistic instincts of people like me. At least, please God, let it ever be so.
Hear hear. The same argument needs to be made and strongly in relation to the criminal legal aid system. No you DON"T get to decide who deserves a competent and vigorous legal defence, or to complain that it costs too much to defend certain people.
That system of checks and balances (and appeals, and people working their arses off for little reward and no prestige) is there to protect YOU.

Cracker: End of Days, in reply to
No slight intended but why oh why is all this good tvnz content only available on sky? I presume usual terms means that sky has exclusivity too?
