Yes, it's a lot to take just for a pub crawl. That footage must be around somewhere deep in an archive.

I suspect, but don't know, that there's a lot more new cars sold per annum in Australia than NZ per head of population

Yeah, I was pretty shocked at the old dunger that was all I could afford in Ozzie. I received a death threat for wearing a t-shirt that said "Bathurst Skyline", too. Keeping Geelong going is important to Ozzies, and if they have to drive Holdens and Fords, they think it's worth the price.

though not a single shot of it appeared on the 6pm news.

Might be less likely now that everyone's got a video camera in their phone. Did you end up in a paddywagon too?

I'm fairly sure that the rich person's take on the economics of boots is extremely different to the poor person's. They will hardly be considering the value for money in the wearing effects of them, and much more the value of the shoe as an investment in style. To that extent, the rich person's boots are far less likely to wear out because they will be discarded at the first sign of wear and replaced with a shiny new set. As such, the actual cost of boot ownership for the rich person will be considerably more. This consideration will probably not even occur to the poor person, who would see that as outrageously frivolous.

Whether that view (that upgrading boots just on style is frivolous) is correct depends on the extent to which the rich person's wealth derives from their appearance. The far greater investment in boots might actually pay off, if even one customer was impressed by the boots and decided to pay for the rich person's services on those grounds, or to marry them, or any number of other very difficult to quantify aspects. Perhaps just wearing stylish boots gives the rich person the confidence to do their rich person business way out of proportion to the cost of the boots.

I still swear by the economics of buying second hand cars. At least in NZ.

Why does no one believe me? :)

I believe you, can distinctly remember a number of students bitterly complaining about it, although I can't for the life of me recall what the occasion was. A pub crawl gone out of hand or something?

Theres lots of rebels without causes around at the moment and revolutions needed without anything to fill the vaccuum afterwards.

I feel strangely optimistic about the future these days.

Note to self - stand well back during mime. 1000 words per minute can't hurt you but the mime equivalent could take out an eye.

Funny that Ben, but as a polynesian outside the royal breeding lines the best other way to improve your lot and marry well was to prove yourself in battle also.

I hope it's a peculiarity of the past, both for polynesians and for everyone else. But very often I wonder whether it is in the nature of peaceful society to gradually become more rigidly hierarchical, and that violence will always be our safety valve against the Iron Law of Oligarchy. Whether that violence is internal or external.
