Thanks Stuff 'n' Things - th€y w€r€ for th€ most part a bit shit - it is quit€ hard unl€ss you hav€ totally pro g€ar, and th€ N€mo on€s ar€ a bit out of focus, but you g€t th€ id€a anyway, which is th€ main point. Th€ cam€ra is just a littl€ Panasonic Lumix point and shoot, with a $400 housing, all up cost m€ l€ss than a grand which mak€s it pr€tty affordabl€. I'll hav€ mor€ n€xt w€€k from th€ Similan Islands, doing a 3 day liv€aboard trip th€r€, suppos€d to b€ th€ b€st diving in Thailand.
Sorry about th€ "€", som€ w€ird thai k€yboard thing...

Hilary - sorry, didn't mean to avoid the question, I decided to award them to various contributors to the competition but given there'd been a bit of snarkiness around the competition itself, I didn't announce who they were, and I'm not going to - but they were all very deserving, and the main winner was delighted, and as it happened I couldn't have chosen a better recipient in terms of what the free flight meant to them.
Thanks for your entries though Hilary and sorry for having been remiss in announcing that the prizes were distributed, the last month at home was crazy trying to clear the decks ahead of my holiday.
Ben - I have just finished the third two-hour session in a net cafe in order to get my latest post up for you :) It wasn't fun, not least of all because of the painfully slow internet connection, problems with USB thingies and tendancy of the keyboard to start writing randomly in Thai, but I did it because you asked. I'll try and post again in the next week or so. Realised my camera has an inbuilt "Make a small jpg copy" function which worked out perfectly...
Stephen - any recommendations for Tokyo? Email me personally if you prefer, use the feedback button cheers!

I don't expect 2000 words a day or anything. But c'mon man, isn't when you are traveling the absolute best time to be active on your weblog? What you're doing is so interesting in it's own right that just posting pictures would almost do the trick. And I'm disappointed that you didn't give us some real insider stuff when you were in Bangkok.
When I was in Bangkok? I think you misread me - I'm not in Bangkok until Friday - of course I would've blogged if I'd been in the thick of that. I was sitting here in NZ watching the situation there, wondering if I'd get to Bangkok (this Friday)...
Yes, travel is hard work, but isn't collecting your thoughts and booty at the end of a day at least a little therapeutic?
When you write for a living, no, not really. Well maybe a little, but not as therapeutic as say, checking out the local bars. :)
The only excuse I can accept is "no access to the net". :-)
The main issue will be access to the internet I suspect, yes. And a small, boring, but important technical point, because I shoot pics in RAW format rather than JPG, and won't be taking my laptop, it's quite hard to get pics off my camera at a netcafe or whatever, and then be able to open them. But if I can, I certainly will!
