We should do it again all the time.
Reckon.
I would like to apologise to anyone I gabbled at incoherently. In a bid to reconnect with my Hamiltonian roots, I was drinking by the jug. (The Standard commentariat would approve.) Also, in 41 years, I had never ever won a prize at a function before. This was very exciting to me.
One reason we should do it more is that while I was pleased to put faces to many names (not least Keir), the night just wasn’t long enough to get around the crowd properly. I’d enjoy attending something every couple of months, say.
It was good to have the first decent laughs I've had in three weeks, anyway.

I seem to recall Grant turning up to the last PAS event in Wellington (the book launch) -- perhaps he'll be at tonight's one and we can take this discussion up in person. I for one would be interested in that.
(if I ever get away from this desk, which is looking more and more unlikely at this point, damnit).

Paging Mr Anthony Rowley, Mr Anthony Rowley.

Before "empathy" became a mere synonym for "sympathy" I found the distinction useful.
I'm not that good at reading other people -- my powers of emotional reception are weak. Poor empathy. But I feel strongly for them when I get it -- strong sympathy.
Note: no claim to anywhere on the spectrum is implied, just an admission of being insensitive more than I'd like.

I dislike you labelling me an Aspie
I had no idea it was a term anyone objected to, and was under the evidently mistaken impression it was a well accepted shorthand. I'm sorry, Chris.

What is the difference between a loan and a deferred payment?
Transferring cash to the borrower.
But it still stinks. Eg, why don't the owners of MediaWorks pony up? They're fully capable.
I'd be interested to know who the other eight broadcasters who have taken up the deferred payment plan are. That might or might not make it look a lot better.

it sounds kinda happy when you say it
If you're Aspie and you know it, clap your hands?

What is this, the fascist comedy hour?
Actually, I think it's the anarchist comedy hour.

Like it or not, Laws is just as entitled to express his point of view as anyone else
The issue is not his entitlement to expression -- a right which everyone enjoys -- but his entitlement to the pulpit.
If I express my belief that he's a poisonous turd to those who provide his pulpit, well hey, I'm just expressing my point of view too. I'm entitled, I believe.

thank you Russell and thank you Chris Trotter for asking the questions.
Yes. I had read the Herald story where Arie's family explained about him, but I had not seen a photo of him or read any hint that he might have been mistreated. If it were not for Chris -- and I have to say I don't normally have a lot of time for him -- I would have missed this completely.
