  • Hard News: The Soap Opera,

Regarding a trust: You would have to have a fair chunk of money up front to set up something like that. Well into the tens of billions, I would have thought.

It does look as though any sell-off of all or part is unlikely. My own preference would be for privatisation, but Labour isn't going to do it, and Key made it pretty clear, even when he was finance spokesman, he doesn't see the payoff, in economic terms, when balanced against the political cost of the move.

  • Speaker: It's On,

I think I might be the sporting equivalent of Morrissey at his most morose. I am horribly worried about NZ teams in high pressure situations, and usually expect the worst. Yet I force myself to watch everything, in a frenzy of worry punctuated by moments of sheer terror and very occasional joy. It's all quite stressful. Call me morbid, call me pale.

Yeah, at times its like watching Dr Who as a kid. Through cracks in the fingers over your eyes.

I remember the tail end of the '95 final, the ABs subbed Richard Loe on, and my brother in law said, O no, he'll get penalised, and I said Nah, he wouldn't do anything that stupid, and within seconds he did. I suppose you'd have to have similar fears about Flavell.

Nice Smiths motif through this thread, BTW. Clever Swine.

I recall Marshall being rotated off during one test and the camera and mic catching his comments as he came off. Threw a little tantie and called it 'Fucking bullshit!'

I suppose an NZ/SA final is the dream for a lot of people. We shall see.

Lineout lifters of the world, united and take over....

    Coupla resposnes:

Firstly, Ta Russell and Jason for the tips. Last post was partly prompted by frustrations caused by, in a wild moment, volunteering to help someone with a submission to a govt dept. It has turned out far more complicated and lengthy than i thought it would be (and its all voluntary)..

Will check out whisky galore next time I'm in Chch - probably in January. Also the Wn Regional Wines, which I know fairly well (first wine shop I discoverd when I moved here in Sept '95 and its still the best in town.

Guanny L: I suspect I know your lecturer. He sounds like a mate of mine who's lecturing journalism at AUT at the moment.

  • Hard News: Not Okay,

In respsone to whoever suggested Bassett is ghosting Moore - I doubt it. The style is pure Moore. I know a lot of people posting here won't like Bassett, but he can write and he can do joined up thinking.

And isn't Anderton happy? No-one's paid him this much attention since early 2002.

  • Hard News: Done and Blended,

The other story I remember was about The Bilders releasing a 7" single with a sealed plastic sleeve in the shape of a fish so to get the record out you had to gut it with a knife.

Hmm. That wasn't 'Ginger Jar'/What a Humba' was it? I've got that single,w hich inexplicably has a couple of drawings of fish on the cover.

Re: the link to the Name Suppression song - a nice touch by whoever did it. Like the credit to 'Whited Sepuchre' - a bit obscure these days, its a reference to a line in the King James version of the Bible, where Christ damns the hypocrites who are all holy and gleaming on the outside, but "ravening wolves" on the inside. Ravening wolves is a pretty good description, in this context...

  • Random Play: Whisky, suits, me,

I picked up the DomPost yesterday and there was a story about Whisky Galore, the tasting, by the reporter who went along to the Wellington tasting.

    BASTARD.

Today I picked up the Herald: there was antoher story, about Whisky Galore, the tasting, by the reporter who went along to the Auckland tasting.

    BASTARD!

Now I switch on the Powerbook, log on the the blogs, and read this.

WHY IS THE WORLD PERSECUTING ME LIKE THIS??? WHY DON'T I GET INVITED TO TASTINGS LIKE THIs??

Oh, thats, right I get to go along to all those great talkfests about the economy, and superannuation, and tax. Which I really love...well, like. Kind of..., but just once, JUST for F+++ing ONCE, I'd like to get invited along to something which involves drinking Lagavulin or another Islay malt... or any single malt, within reason....

(I'll go and crack open my own Lagavulin now....)

  • Hard News: The Near Future,

    A couple of points:

Moore was at the heart of Labour's infighting for years, whether or not he made PM, so he does have some insight into what's going on.

Yeah, I think a lot of what he wrote was hypocritical. Not sure he was essentially wrong though, [although the 'personal destruction' thing was overkill since he didn't provide the evidence to back it up]

A few things I think stick in his craw: one is that it was Clark, according to the histories I've read, who went to Palmer and said 'stand down, we'll lose less badly under Moore than we will under you'.

It's not just that it was Clark who then rolled him. Labour, under Moore, nearly won the 1993 election, and one of the reasons they didn't was Clark's backers downed tools in the last week of the campaign and did sod all. They didn't want to win under Moore.

The funny thing is a lot of people voted Labour at that election who couldn't stand Moore. I was at a party full of Labour supporters and when Moore came on and did that bizarre 'it will be a long cold night...' speech the heckling of the TV screen was deafening. When it died down I asked in a loud voice how many of those yelling had just voted for the party led by that guy there were a few sheepish grins and wry shrugs.

When I went into the gallery a few years after that Moore used to bring around his own press releases. He didn't trust the Labour press secs. He was very much a man out on his own.

  • Hard News: The Near Future,

I didn't read the Moore comment re: "money lenders" as suggesting Peters was anti-Semetic, mostly because the rest of the piece was so unsubtle that if Moore had been making such a suggestion he would have egged it up a bit more.

I don't think Peters is a racist either. He's an opportunist who knows how to appeal to racists.

    Craig wrote:

God knows in the rich history of rat-bastardry that is Australian politics, Rudd is as close to squeaky clean as anyone's likely to get. :)

That's a damn good point. This is very suspicious, in fact. While we're at it, Costello looks too bloody clean to be true, as well....

Best comment thus far on the Rudders strip club though was from Dirk Flinthart who asked the most important question: did he tip?

If Ruddy left a decent tip, then he's good enough to be an Australian PM. But if he patted at his pockets, looked embarrassedly at his buddies and then shuffled out bent-over to keep the Little Opposition Leader from showing his head, I'm afraid we're going to have to give him to the Americans. He's no bloody use over here.
