It certainly is a crap ferry terminal - I preferred the old one which was refreshingly scuzzy and dilapidated and generally un-Devonport. The ferries are a great way to get around Auckland, for those who are lucky enough to live and work near ferry terminals.
The North Shore has certainly harboured its share of writers over the years .. I've always liked the thought of Janet Frame lurking in the hut in Frank Sargeson's garden. I wonder what she would have made of Auckland in 2009. -
When I lived in Auckland, I had a sea kayak and would tow it down to the local beach (Cheltenham) and head out to Rangitoto. And I'd paddle to visit friends in St Heliers. I really did see the city in terms of its waterways.
I forget which writer described Auckland as 'There are ferries at the bottom of the garden' - I believe Auckland used to be quite a gracious city once upon a time, but that must have been a while ago.
Thanks for a lovely post. -
actually it was the Lindt's that I was referring to as being excessively wimpy ....
I prefer to think of it as subtle ;-)

I really miss Mexican chocolate - the stuff with the evil chillis in it
May I recommend Lindt's chilli chocolate? It is dangerously easily available - our local dairy has it.

Danielle, I completely see your point, it ill behoves any of us to be judgmental about other people's choices.
But I just wish the whole thing (Lotto) was more fun and low key and less hyped and glorified. This just from the Herald website:
BREAKING NEWSNew details: Four family members share $36m win... details soonBreaking news? Whatever.

Danielle, you're right, it is kind of patronising.
I was in a shop yesterday and the chap in front of me was alternately asserting that 'you gotta be in to win' and discussing what he was going to do with the $36m.
You gotta be in to lose, I thought to myself. -
We make a virtue out of what is effectively a tax on idiocy.
Idiocy is a little harsh, Brickley; more like statistically illiterate.

I apologise in advance for this complete swerve of topic, but does anyone else share my total lack of interest in Big Wednesday?
Yesterday it seemed to be the only topic of conversation everywhere I went, and today the front page of the DomPost is completely given over to it.
Seems like a rather unhealthy national obsession to me. -
As for Bain, I decided he was guilty on the day of his arrest.
That's kind of scary, Robert. Based on what?

The better-made point is that the jurors sound like they weren't actually taking it seriously.
Well, yes. The impression is that at least a few of them had already made up their minds and had ceased paying attention to the trial and were just killing time, so to speak.
As for the computer timing, I thought that the point about it was that it was inconclusive and not particularly useful to either camp.
