  • Southerly: Everybody Needs Good Neighbours,

I read in the paper some time ago of a guy somewhere in NZ who got so furious with an absent neighbor's alarm that he went around and shot it with a rifle. It killed it, and he took the illegal use of a firearm rap calmly, saying it was worth it for a decent night's sleep.

Having any more, Kyle? My experience is that two feels like way more than twice as hard as one. With one, you get breaks. With two, the other uses all those breaks. It's not about the looking after, which is actually slightly more efficient per-child. It's the complete loss of respite.

I can tell you that baskets definitely affect the handling when heavily loaded. But you get used to it, and ride accordingly. It's hard to describe the feeling, other than that you get 'steering delay', and need to use a lighter hand. Don't take sharp turns at speed. Also, note that they will make your rear brake less effective, and your front brake more, the exact reverse of panniers. They add to the wind resistance some. This wind can be good if you have cold goods in there, though.

They're great for carrying a small amount of stuff, takes about 2 seconds to hook them over the bar. Cheap as chips too, Warehouse and K-mart have them for under $20 for a wire frame one. If you want style, of course you'll pay more.

  • Up Front: Something Chronic,

Who needs an alarm clock when you have small children? I bought one recently to keep my son in bed longer. With ample bribes, it worked, so I get to sleep in to the grand old hour of 6:45 now.

Nothing so far about having kids has been harder than being woken (and having to get up and cope) at 5am, after working through until past midnight the night before. Intranight feeds were nothing by comparison, I could all but sleep with giving a bottle, and knew I'd be slipping straight back into phase 3 sleep within seconds of my head hitting the pillow. But it's pretty hard when you know that's your lot, mate, no more sleep for another 19 hours.

Antoine wrote a nice post on cyclingauckland.co.nz about a ride around Mangere Bridge. I checked it out myself yesterday, and fully concur with Russell that the ride back up to Hillsborough is pretty hard, if you're getting there via the Isthmus Cycleway. Also note, you can get onto the cycleway from Sandringham Rd, no need to ride up to the start on Maioro Rd.

  • Southerly: Everybody Needs Good Neighbours,

I've never had any bad neighbors. I credit some of that to not seeming too approachable. My general feeling towards them is always that I'm happy to wave, anything more than that and I'm suddenly a bit busy. I can see that having nice neighbors could be worth the effort of getting to know them, but there's the chance of them becoming a pain, and then you're stuck with the buggers. It's one of the best things about living in a city, that you can ignore you neighbors and hang out with the people you actually like instead.

  • Southerly: Everybody Needs Good Neighbours,

I recently "encouraged" some ducks that had chanced to land in my back yard, so as to keep my kids amused. I fed them and they returned every day. I soon discovered why people might have a problem with it. They shit everywhere. My entire backyard, all the pathways, the back steps, my back deck, soon had shit all over them. Then I couldn't get rid of them, and they became more and more insistent, entering the house and shitting, if I chanced to leave my door open. Finally I'd had enough, and chased them off with a broom, yelling loudly. It took about 10 minutes of this for them to get the message. Having scared them off, I look up to see my neighbor peeping at me over the fence, phone in hand. I guess you don't often see you neighbors running around with a broom screaming their head off. It probably seemed a bit nuts.
