    Where there's a swill, there's a sway...
Well, Banks does have a track record in the public drinking and entertainment area...

In his career before entering politics, Banks worked as a market researcher in the pharmaceutical industry, as a commercial property developer, and as a restaurant owner. He served for a time as Chairman of the New Zealand Licensed Restaurant and Cabaret Association.

Though for a younger person nowadays a CV like that would probably describe a different, and more debauched, arc...

    Teeing off...
gotta say that the Dance Exponents' Victoria tee is a little off the mark, Queen Victoria may have had an Empire, but she isn't a landlady...

    Name not given rightly...

    John & Leisha

    it's Liesha...
...and it would be fitting for John to do the art

    that So and So...

From today's Granny... 'Bad bank' sent another 20 firms to wall
    Sound familiar?

So Henderson had his hooks in SCF for $20-$30 million, guess none of the $17 million he got from the City Council here went to defray those borrowings...
and I assume some of those bankrupt bars listed are the ones owned by Simon Botherway's brother, Jonathan (also known as Barry)...
but no worries Simon had set Jonathan up in another Hotel though shortlived it seems as Jonathan resigned as director of Springlands Trading on June 29, due to his bankruptcy. it also seems Simon Botherway has links to George Kerr's Torchlight Fund which had money in SCF, all kosher according to Securities Commission counsel...

  • Random Play: So. I'm off Te Radar again,

    The doors, people are strange...

My three sons (copyright) were in rock bands in Auckland and – because I know more than something about that world from considerably damaging experience – I would always tell them that rock'n'roll was “pay at the door”.

    Sage advice!
I remember from my days (early '80s) on the door at The Windsor there were some bands that had ridiculously huge "guest lists" that I used to say:
"Oh, I'll just use the Auckland phone book, and if they're not in there, they pay!"
My view was that if they were all the band's "friends" they wouldn't mind paying and supporting their endeavours, otherwise they were cutting the legs out from under them...

    Hanover fist...
Watson & Hotchin and the Hole in the Ground Gang must be elated that everybody seems to have quickly forgotten about Allied Nationwide Finance going into receivership last week, possibly taking $130 million out of the Govt guarantee scheme - and I wonder if Dave Henderson met the deadline to buy back some of his now Chch City owned properties this week?
Grab your sacks and head back up to the top of the ride... Helter Skelter!

  • Hard News: The Suicide Question,

I've been quite shocked today about the reporting of homicide on the front page of the Herald, I must say.

It's all over the radio too, I'm surprised this isn't all sub judice till after a court case or coronial hearing...

...but this is the paper that "reported" a missing woman's body might be "cut up" while saying it didn't have to give any reason for the speculation, isn't it?

    mathy madness...

it doesn't reassure when the so-called informed media financial commentators can't agree on the figures either...

The Herald has it that: "...or $405 for every man woman and child in New Zealand" on a $1.775 billion bailout...

(I guess they are adding in the $175 million loan to quit current debt)

The Press today has it that: "The collapse of South Canterbury Finance will cost New Zealanders $372 a head after the Government made good on the Crown guarantee." on a $1.6 billion bailout...

Stuff's Business Day has it that: " Taxpayers face a wait of up to four years to find out how much they will get back from their $1.8 billion bailout of South Canterbury Finance's depositors.
The collapse of the company will cost $372 for every New Zealander. "
same per capita figure as in The Press but based on a $200 million larger total amount - I guess division is not their strong suit!!

still what's a few million, eh...

    Chicken census...

My Mother always told me to never put all my eggs in one basket. Sound advice without a financial advisor in sight.

Shares in a wickerwork enterprise then? If extra baskets are to be a growth industry...

    Keeping up with the Joneses...

Most importantly, avoid any business venture promoted by a past or present All Black.

Hmmm I notice billboards round town for Instant Finance with Stacey Jones pic and signature - very reassuring, maybe they'll change their name to Little General Finance!
    - or the League of Extraordinary Expenses...

Apparently the ads are to get borrowers as they don't let the public invest (see Hickey's July 7 comment in the comments under linked article)
