Capture: Flash Cars, in reply to
There is a Queen St regulars reunion of sorts on the 26th August in Auckland, meeting at Morrisons heading out to Dairy Flat, a third “Steve Bliss Memorial run”, those that know Murray or muso Paul Dunningham will no doubt be aware of it.

Capture: Cinema Scoped, in reply to
The hind quarter numbing length of so many modern movies are perfect for intermissions but they are a no no for most multiplexes who seem to schedule just enough time to scoop up the spilt popcorn between sessions.
-
Full marks Geoff, your comments numbers may top those of Murray Cammick’s “Flash Cars” reprise on Capture. Every one has been to the movies!
For me the Balmoral Capitol and Oruru Swamp Palace are ones where many hours were spent from school day matinees, “Animal House” to arthouse (Cap’). The Capitol photo just invites you to walk in.
Richard Weatherly (International Film Fest. director prior to B. Gosden) ran the Swamp Palace for approx ten years from the late 90s, and still distributes arthouse via Cinevista and Aust. Antidote films to some of the cinemas you describe. Kaitaia only reinstated a cinema last year–Te Ahu, a steeply seated ex dramatic theatre.
Note: Jan Grefstad of Avondale Hollywood and Classic Cinema fame (and some infamy) wrote an illustrated work, as far as I am aware unpublished due to his death, called “Auckland Cinemas” which could well complement your efforts if turned up.

So Banksie is off on a technicality? Due process to some. If the need ever arose personally during some uncomfortable legal bind I might not mind a similar outcome, but I am not an elected, paid, public official.

50th, it’s your party RB, sprinkling of history maybe but think–what do you really like and what do you mostly play these days, or, return to in party mode? don’t pander to the punters, just blast it.
Funerals tend to be a bit ‘Desert Island Disc’. “Another one bites the dust” attempts at humour and lachrymose sentiment. How about a dignified approach such as Eno’s “Music for Airports”.

In dispatches, have not found the artwork yet, neglected in my earlier comment to mention Hodgson made an incredibly poignant strip one time in the “Listener” before they sacked him. Thankfully many of us have now sacked said rag.
Anyway, it involved a young person with Downs Syndrome who got teased and hassled all day long on the bus etc. When he gets home, his mum says how was your day? –Great! says the young person. Trace‘s works are slowburners somtimes.
-
Go Hodgson. There is a recent tendency (beyond, but probably arising from the Wiki thing) for built in negative reaction to nazi/facist referencing as if that should close any debate down. Rodney and Mark Ford’s bastard spawn Super city structures are corporatist but not fascist. Fascism is based on corporatism enforced by overwhelming state force applied to groups and individuals to get compliance.
Paula Bennett and Paula Rebstock’s social engineering are obviously not fascist either. But the underlying message does directly relate to nazi styles, some are worthy to procreate, some are not. If the torys were straight up there would be more funds available for all womens reproductive health requirements. Trace pushes the boundaries and more people should.

got the post on Volume.
Parkside media who cover the NZ petrolhead and gadget beat with print magazines and a bit of online had a perfectly serviceable local Mac publication that sold quite well at newstands but did not sell enough advertising for the owner, so was extinguished. Which was a shame as for example writers covered Macs in NZ education, real articles not just advertorial like the imported $20+ mac mags.
Computer mags are not everyones cup of, and ‘Rich’ above is rather cruel but on the mark. I used to be a magazine junkie but now buy only ones I might keep for various reasons. Most of my news and culture is now via internet. But cry me a river publishers if you treat your readers with disdain for whatever reason.

Hard News: #JohnDotBanks and all, in reply to
ACTs ability to have an MMP parliamentary presence, “coat tailing” under the high 5% threshold not withstanding, was worthy of support for a while. Sunlight is usually best to paraphrase an old line.
But the Super City debacle where the worst kind of Corporatism and sinking lid economics were proscribed for the city and National’s duplicitous regular Trojan Horsing of ACT finished it for me. Should Banksie stay or should he go? Don’t care, ACT is now officially munted. Zero point zero (0.0) in last RM poll.
-
Banksie may well squiggle out of the 50 ‘big ones’ on a technicality. But as ‘Rodders’ discovered after eventually coughing up for his UK gal pal trip, his political career was effectively over in any event.
And so with Epsom, if the end result is bye bye ACT that will do me because then the Nats will have to front their own private prison, small govt. charter school right wingery.
