In Auckland, DKD opened in 1985, I think. There were a few other places serving espresso (what was the health-food plae in Lorne St?), but it's generally agreed that you can trace the Auckland cafe culture from there.
Ooh 'fish in a bowl' at DKD. Of course that was hot chocolate, but the triple shot long black was great too, especially when out late ...

We were in northern Italy last month and found the espresso to be routinely pretty fine and even better, it was cheap. About 80-90 Euro cents per cup drunk at the bar.
have to agree, we were over in May and even the free espresso they served us on the intercity trains was great. South of France was good - great cafe in Uzes - but Paris not so good.

The only long black I've ever actually _thrown out_ was from starbucks.
I was desperate for a coffee and everything else nearby was closed.

I think one of the problem with talking about concensus is that it is practically impossible to get scientists to _absolutely_ agree about anything. It is in fact their job to question stuff and say "Maybe, but I'd really like to actually see the raw data on this".
Unfortunately this can also be a problem when trying to get scientists to talk to the media. You'll never get a scientist to call anything "safe" or "definite". There's no such thing as safe. There is always a risk even if it is 0.00001% likely to ever occur. But this refusal to label anything safe can lead to panic "Medicine/Food/Bicycle/Process type X is UNSAFE!!!!"
Hmm, I think I got slightly off topic. One of the issues I have is that people are using the "consensus" or lack of one amongst scientists to try and prove a point about global warming. As long as the scientists are doing their jobs and investigating data, there probably should not be a consensus in either direction. I think it is a bit naive to expect one.
(There was contention about the purpose of DNA for many years after its discovery and the publication of its structure).

I may not worship the Edmonds Cook Book, but I'm not sure. I am very fond of it, especially its recipe for making pickled onions. Would the worship require sacrifices? I have been known to create the occasional burnt offering in the oven ......

Do you know if Aotearoa biocarbon are actually looking at liscencing the flash-burner from UH to make carbon for agriculture?
I was a bit worried about by-product pollution too, but it's nice to see that although they aren't claiming it doesn't produce smoke and tar, they've got a funding grant to investigate ways to adapt the tecnology to reduce the byproducts. -
I have wondered how much of the opposition to this bill has been due to sheer dislike of the MP presenting it. I can see the sense behing the bill, but have to constantly remind myself that I should not let the fact that Sue Bradford irritates the @#$% out of me bias my opinion on the debate. If only there was more calm, rational discussion of the point of view. Thanks for a great post Anke.

Well I'm afraid I can't confirm the existance of Phil Goff, but I can confirm the existance of Lynne Pillay, MP for Waitakere. She performed perhaps her most important job of the year in awarding the Cup to Waitakere United on Sunday for Winning the Oceania Club championship in football (soccer for those who believe football is only played with an oval ball). My friend's father was also of the opinion that she has been performing other such important services as the opening of kindergartens and school galas. However, I have not been in attendance at such events.
