If I can enjoy baseball, I can (start to) enjoy cricket.
Come over to the flannelled side, Hadyn. Resistance is futile.

Picking it up from Hadyn's thread...
I call the mentality 'Cricket Goth'.
Love it.
And, for the purists, the fact that test results are so much worse than the other forms of the game rubs it in.
The purists ought to know that it's easier to produce good one day players than good test players, surely. And, speaking as a fan, I enjoy tests more than ODIs even though we tend to be on the losing side way more often than not.

I'm crosscommenting this on Emma's thread - Hadyn doesn't even like cricket!

The NZ cricket fan has suffered a few scars over the years; surely a hint of weary scepticism is warranted?
A hint? All I see is guys reversing with dump trucks-full of scepticism and tilting the contents all over the field. And it begins at home, my partner is a classic example.
The amateur psychologist in me (a creature I like to torture from time to time) has this theory that it's having had a statistically improbably good team in the eighties that has ruined the psyche of the NZ cricket fan. Hopefully the team will keep performing at this level long enough to erase that memory and make the supporters more, er, supportive.

I commented on this post before it was even published. That's kind of disturbing.

Could they try any any harder to make visiting the US a pain in the ass?
A couple of years ago I had to travel to Auckland just so they could look me in the eye (literally, the meeting took five seconds) because even though Italy is a visa waiver country you still needed a passport with biometric info, otherwise off to Auckland they made you scamper. And I'm from Wellington, where the American embassy is located. That's a couple of hundred bucks I'm never going to see again.

He’ll have to learn how to play the short stuff first though.
Didn't they say the same thing about those twins a few years back, what were their names?
Oh and Jamie How?God I hate New Zealand cricket fans...

My only concern with people bringing up Orwell all the time is that they're reading the wrong book entirely. You want to arm yourself with this one.

Which I guess fits in with NZ batting efforts, so welcome to your national team Southee.
The word backstage is that he has the makings of a very fine batsman. Time will tell, but I wouldn't discount it.

The issue would be how to prevent "family" groupings like the Kahui and Glassie versions.
I'm sorry, but how do you mean? Prevent disfunctional family groupings or prevent extended families living in the same quarters and caring for each other's children? Not for nothing, but I think a lot of (sometimes temporarily) unfit parents could use the help of people close to them. I can think of examples.
