Southerly: Tower Insurance Have Some Bad…, in reply to
the fact you’re publicising this and having to point it out to me,
Dude, opposition press releases just aren't news. I actually think some of the more stunty things we've seen lately are experiments at how to get some news traction when traditional methods aren't working. Disclaimer: I am a party member, but the previous sentence is pure speculation.

For want of a better place to post this: I was interested in Jordan Carter's proposal.
A Canterbury Housing Development Authority could be set up as part of CERA, and it could have the job of acquiring land and building new suburbs.
It could sell these down slowly over time only meeting its cost of capital, so in the long run it would be fiscally neutral.
Developing new suburbs on that scale must, inevitably & surely, mean that per-dwelling costs are lower. Especially if a bit of low-rise apartment accommodation is included as a new choice for Canterbury residents to consider.
Private developers can't do that. They have a legal responsibility to make money for their shareholders as their prime imperative. They have moderately short time horizons. They would be logically insane to pass up the opportunities that very high demand presents to them.
It is time for the people, working together through the public authorities, to take matters into their own hands and to plan and deliver new housing options that work for everyone.

Hard News: 2011: The Year Of What?, in reply to
Maybe it’s a Christian thing
For me what makes Tapu Misa so admirable as a columnist is that she is a very thoughtful person. I don't find it at all odd that she decided to *shock* read the book first before coming to a conclusion. I think she's a free thinker and I respect that.
As for Wishart, well, even a blind chicken can peck corn. A stopped clock is right twice a day. My presumption is that he's probably wrong on any given thing, but it's not a given.
The question for me is whether the claims in the book that contradict reports are true. If so, it doesn't reflect well on the news media.

I think The Press' headline is... unfortunate. Looter. Really?

Field Theory: How's that working out for…, in reply to
If you don’t sweat it isn’t a sport
So darts, shooting, archery and billiards are not sports? Interesting. Actually do you sweat if you pole vault, throw discus or javelin? I always take longer than 5 minutes to sweat doing most anything at normal NZ temperatures. I really think this is not a workable definition at all.

I’m torn. One the one hand, I’m in the 2/3 of NZ that either doesn’t care or actively dislikes the RWC. On the other hand, I’d say that the RWC is a cultural festival in its own right. Rugby is a genuine popular cultural expression here, no matter how commercial or professional, like football in Brazil. There are many people in Rio who dread Carnival too. On the gripping hand, I am tired of the presumption in much of the commercial promotion for the RWC that it’s somehow my duty as a New Zealander to give a shit.

Just checking in to say that having arrived to check in at Melbourne 7AM yesterday, I am finally home in Wellington now. Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaark what a mission. I'm afraid hearing about the frolics made me more and more cross as I queued and waited and diverted.
Then it started snowing again just as I came up my street to get to the house and I went "awww, snow."

Hard News: London's Burning, in reply to
If you have monospaced fonts, laying out tables is child’s play. For me, anyway. Sorry. I try to think like normal people but it really is difficult, especially today. I have been playing Speaker To Non Technical People all day and my Normality Feigning Reserve is completely exhausted.
Edit: thank you, Brother David. Also, snap.

Russell, can we please have tags for monospaced font so that ASCII art is possible? Ta.
