Hard News: Kia kaha, Helen Kelly, in reply to
Both John Campbell and Helen Kelly were nominated for New Zealander of the Year. Despite extensive support neither got through to the short list. Perhaps they should have played sport..

Just a pity that they couldn't find the small amount c$4million to fix the Gisborne railway line and get the logging trucks off the road. Instead of more roads we could have electrified the main trunk line, developed proper commuter rail to Hamilton and Palmerston North and revived South Island lines such as between Dunedin and Invercargill. After all, even Cabinet Ministers must get frustrated when stuck behind increasingly large trucks on NZ's narrow, winding provincial roads. But not enough votes in those regions, I suppose.

Disability abuse continues. http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/76314608/hutt-mental-health-unit-allowed-patient-to-go-awol-smoke-weed-before-his-death
Officials from mental health, disability support, district health boards really need to do some serious collaborative self-reflection and ask whether they are the problem or can actually work with families to find proper community-based, person-centred solutions.

Does anyone know the difference between all the different asthma groups? There seems to be a foundation and a society and some other organisations. Wonder if any of them mention buteyko?

I was one of those pretty cross about the end of the broadcasting fee. It was minimal at a couple of hundred dollars a year (much, much less than a Sky subscription of today) and was a small price to pay for good public broadcasting. It came in with the neoliberal sweep of Rogernomics. Roger Douglas had long had an interest in liberalising broadcasting. Sense of doom subsequently justified.

Thank you, Gray, that is very interesting.
