The day is so solemn, apparently you can't even talk about the weather in public!

Hard News: Criminalising Journalism, in reply to
I would bet my house that was arranged before Key would agree to appear. When Key has spent the last three years doing this – and getting away with being treated like some South Pacific Berlusconi by a compliant media – the wonder is 40%+ of New Zealanders still won’t vote for him.
In my more bitter moments I think of him more as the Vladimir Putin of the South Pacific - carefully managed persona concealing impenetrable void.
And before Craig jumps on me, I was only talking about the PR, not about any of the nastier things that happen in Putin country

Thought someone might have linked to this great analysis of Joyce's motives by Lew by now. Oh well, I will...

I'm starting to get really worried about the same thing as Tim Watkin

Hard News: The perils of political confidence, in reply to
This photo says volumes to me, http://www.listener.co.nz/nz-election-2011-live/tuesday-15-november-the-little-black-bag/ that little black bag is right on Key’s elbow. Something is not quite right, most of all the ordering out of the media for me is the crucial point, no one said…I’ll stay thanks?
The fabulous Slane cartoon at the top of this suggests a possible explanation.

I'm loving the cartoons as much as anything this election. The one of Key as "Smug" on top of his dragon horde of gold was priceless
Oh and thanks Craig that radio interview is very good ( I don’t listen to radio, maybe I should).
Didn't she do well? Proud to know her.

As Judi Lapsley Miller predicted in this very thread earlier today!
Um, not quite, but thanks : ). See my Location. The initials are a hang over from work days, when I didn't want to be seen indulging in political discourse in work hours. After four years of blissful retirement I don't give a stuff.

I'm assuming, probably incorrectly, that the item they don't want to be made public is a discussion about Banks taking over from Brash as leader of ACT...

Legal Beagle: Referendum Fact Check #7:…, in reply to
1. It has been the practice in New Zealand for a substantial length of time that our electoral laws do whatever they can to ensure that people's votes count. If the voter's intention is clear their vote counts as far as possible. e.g. if you leave blank or void the party vote your electorate vote still counts; if you accidentally cast a special declaration vote for the wrong electorate, and are enrolled in another, then your party vote still counts etc.
Can I just double check that this means that if someone uses something other than a tick to indicate a preference that their vote is still valid? I really like the generosity of spirit behind this premise, especially when compared with the tactics employed in the US, and doubtless elsewhere.

Speaker: Doing the right thing on retirement, in reply to
Disclaimer: Aged 62,and have been retired (self-funded) for 5 years
Ditto, and I support a Universal Basic Income, partly to take all the special pleading, bureaucracy, perverse incentives and downright prejudice out of the whole debate (not from you, Raymond).
It's been green policy for a long time. I suppose it was a bit divisive to highlight this election, but I hope it will become mainstream over the next few years. Now Gareth Morgan has come on board, it might
