Looks like my daughter on her way to school this morning. She had so much fun racing her scooter down the hill yesterday with the northerly pushing her along at a crazy speed, but this morning’s southerly, not so much. “It’s not fun!” “It’s not fast!” “My legs are tired!” “It’s cold!” And yes, I did say something like, “All those winters in Beijing and now you complain about the cold here in Wellington?!”

What you really mean
What I really mean is I want things to be done properly, not the half-arsed, rushed, botched up nonsense this government is so good at.
Oh, but wait, you then say:

So I don't know, which is it? We can't go through a proper process of discussing our constitutional arrangements because it's "not realistic in a pluralistic society"? Or we no longer leave decisions on questions of national identity to the experts?

But only after a long, thorough, and properly consultative process in which all the issues, especially the place of the Treaty in the new republic, are properly thrashed out and the best possible new constitution drawn up, then it all put back to the public in a properly organised referendum, perhaps requiring some sort of super majority to pass.

My almost 5-year old daughter expressed a very clear preference for the new flag this morning. I said “tough, you’re too little to vote.” Count me among those who’d rather cast an active vote to keep the old flag than either vote for mediocrity or have my protest spoiled ballot or non-vote allow a mediocrity to scrape through.
I’d also much rather first discuss our constitutional arrangements, then discuss symbols. That seems far more sensible than fiddling with superficialities but doing nothing substantial.

Everyone’s entitled to a political opinion
It was my impression that, being no ordinary mortals, the royals aren't entitled to political opinions, or at least, expressed political opinions, and certainly not running for parliament. Trouble with Charlie is he has been known to push the limits of what he is allowed to express.

Why? Hawai'i has the union jack on its state flag.
