Judging from my own personal samples and canvassing of opinion from round the 'hood (predominantly middle-class, between 30 and 50), I'm fairly certain that this by-election will be almost completely won and lost on the local issues.
For many, the national political situation has already been well and truly decided in the sense of change, so here is an opportunity to have local political issues - particularly SH20, New North Road, St Lukes, etc - front and centre.

While I think the reluctance to accept genuine responsibility on the part of the guilty party is nauseating, I have to say that I think both parties (in Veitch's case spectacularly so) will be extremely ill-advised to continue to try and prosecute this matter via PR and media over the next few weeks.
While its infinitely more understandable on the part of the complainant (wanting to be able to - finally - tell her story in the face of what has appeared to be a very well-orchestrated campaign), a protracted war of 'leaks' will do absolutely nobody - hungry media and salacious public aside - any favours whatsoever.
If I was advising the person who pled guilty. Stop. Take your lumps. Admit your terrible mistake with no caveats. Do not try and justify or rationalise. Do not drag this out through the court of public opinion. If you want sympathy, remember this is not about you. Do not try and attack the media - this will be counter-productive. Move on. Rebuild. By trying to continually spin this matter in your favour you damage yourself. Do not claim 'This was not me" in the same breath as a guilty plea. Most reasonable people will believe in the power of redemption if they think it is founded on a genuine belief or desire to make good on past mistakes. Prove to people that you understand all this and that you can change.

For those interested, there is a new documentary on Hillsborough to mark the 20 year anniversary being shown on History Channel tonight (not the excellent Jimmy McGovern docu-drama mind).
The doco tonight will feature Dalglish talking publicly for the first time of the impact it had on him and the club.
Yes, with 20/20 hindsight it now seems clear it (or something very much like 'it') was always a disaster waiting to happen, with clubs, football authorities, police, government, and indeed some fans all too willing to accept poor or compromised or outdated standards of safety.
Have seen it suggested more than once that Conservatives considered football a grubby working-mans sport and were more than happy to see the sport dwindle and die (and indeed it was the likes of Conservative Ministers Douglas Hurd and Patnick who were all too willing to parlay the lies to The Sun that has so inflamed the Hillsborough tragedy).
Its somewhat ironic that the tragedy led directly to the Taylor report which has led to all seater stadiums, premier league stuffed with foreign stars, players earning squillions, and average fans being priced out of a seat.
I myself can still remember getting up early in the morning with a flatmate (also a mad Liverpool fan) to watch the game, and being so traumatised that we were still sitting on the couch staring at the TV later that night - didn't move all day.

For what its worth, much of the best writing I've ever seen - fiction and non-fiction - has been about sport .... (although in some instances I am perhaps stretching the definition of 'sport')

Heh - I think Andrew Dubber may have started it, but not being at all previously familiar wth Mr Sterling's work, I can certainly see (as per introduction from RB) why he can tend to polarise people.

Playing the victim, because there is no way that an Australian cricketer would ever stoop so low as to unfairly claim an advantage to win a game or preserve a career .... it would be positively un-Australian :)
Now if only we can get Brad to talk a bit more about himself in the 3rd person, the picture would be complete.
