Our dishwasher doesn't seem to have a 'poach' setting, Angus (that will teach us to to buy cheap appliances). What do you recommend?

According to Brian Rudman:
The coalition isn't the first to try to fight global warming in the courts. In September 2008, Queenstown property developer Basil Walker tried unsuccessfully to get an injunction against the Labour Government's Emissions Trading Scheme becoming law.
Arguing against "the theory of global warming", he filed Act MP Muriel Newman's article "Exposing the Climate Change Agenda" as part of his supporting evidence. Justice Denis Clifford threw the application out as unconstitutional.

But if it was a publicity stunt, it was bloody poorly organised.
Agreed. These guys seem increasingly desparate.

but the peaceable appearance of any society is much more fragile and easily disrupted than you might think.
Well, I guess, but it seemed to me that the veneer of civilisation was thicker in Canada than in most other places I've ever lived in. As an example I hardly ever used to lock my house or my car or my bicycle .. it seemed remarkably mellow and safe. Admittedly it was one charmed little corner of Canada (Victoria, Vancouver Island).

Anarchy (literally) is just below the surface of any society, and Canada is no exception.
When I lived in Canada it used to be a standard joke that an anarchist in Canada was someone who refused to use the postal code.

As Gareth says in his excellent summary, there is nothing in this bizarre move by the NZCSC that is being done in good faith - it is purely a cynical attention-seeking manouevre. He also points out that the fact that the action is being lodged by a recently-established charitable trust (the 'NZ Climate Science Education Trust') seems to suggest that they anticipate losing and are attempting to give themselves some legal protection. Which further underlines the cynicism.

I suspect you haven't picked up a North & South for a while (ie: since Robyn Langwell was editor). It's actually been bloody good this year.
I agree. The article about vaccination, in the June issue, was very good too.

Feminism - free to fuck up. Your life, your decisions, your responsibility. Just because you are an autonomous adult.
I don't think I need more than thatBut with respect, Raymond, you need a hell of a lot more than that to get to the point where that definition makes any sense.
Sounds like you're talking about a mission statement versus a strategic plan ..
Isn't 'the freedom to fuck up' a more general definition of autonomy? -
Hah, Ngaire, same here, we've been known to tell people that our large and docile moggy is our three days' protein after the earthquake. Together with the barbeque and a huge Vietnamese mint plant that I can't imagine ever using except in dire emergency.

Those folks came down in a different spaceship from the rest of us.
Maybe that's why the contest is called Miss Universe .. it's open to contestants from other solar systems.
