I don't understand how people who are not affected lack empathy for those who are. Even Joe Bennett on the RNZ Panel yesterday was very dismissive. His attitude was that most Christchurch people aren't or weren't affected, and that a tiny minority of people are still making a fuss about nothing much.

A columnist in the paper this morning was lamenting the banning of DDT and blaming Rachel Carson and Silent Spring. He seemed to be saying that if we could still spray DDT everywhere we wouldn't have zika. (I suspect the mosquitos would have developed immunity and many more people would have died of cancer caused by DDT).

In addition schools which have acted as safe community hubs have been closed by Government decree and children relocated to bigger more distant schools, and Relationships Aotearoa lost contracts and closed, so a skilled workforce lost.
I was saddened that many of the commentators on Sunday mentioned the ongoing insurance problems and that these would start all over again. Why can't the government sort this out? Previous governments did and one set up a state insurer.

In my experience Pat Tuohy, who signed that letter, is one of the good people in the Ministry of Health. Paediatrician by background. But it is often hard for public servants to be true 'public servants' these days, as the ministers' needs come first.

As far as I am aware there is an active clinical ethics group at CCH DHB. Some of the members gave presentations at last year's Bioethics and Health Law conference in Wellington mentioning some of the issues that had come up for them. Good people, who I'm sure would be happy to help.

These are just two of numerous such stories. But the state's hatred and fear of disability goes back to the 1880s with Immigration Acts aimed at keeping out the Chinese and disabled people. The Chinese eventually got an official apology.

Scary stuff. Will be an even bigger battle to ban these chemicals when the TPPA is ratified. Round Up just the beginning.

To be fair, Grant could probably write something similar about a musician or anyone else he admires. He just happens to be writing as a sports fan in this post. I don't get it personally, as those who inspire me are more likely to be community activists, but I'm prepared to try and understand his perspective.
