  • Hard News: Problems,

What was needed to make them fall was concerted political action, not leisure activities.

Yeah, but comrade... you've gotta switch off sometime. And while you're taking a break from concerted political action, you might as well watch something decent.

So would this blacklist prevent any connections to the server? Because it strikes me that the first thing you might know about it, if you were one of those innocents caught out by it, would be when you couldn't establish an SMTP connection to your mail server... or FTP any new files to your website... or view your own web page... without any warning and with no way, since it's a secret blacklist, of finding out what the hell is happening to you. A bit mad isn't it?

Not interested in the prize, just like haiku. Went through a big phase of writing them when I was a student, now I try to slip them into my weekly status reports (makes getting the seasonal references harder, but challenge is good).

  • Hard News: The Commercial Crunch,

This may be the wrong time to point out that traditional haiku should have some reference to the seasons.

  • Hard News: Problems,

I know plenty of right wing readers of such publications

Yeah, I was a pretty madly right-wing kid until I realised (about age 10) that Judge Dredd was actually satire, and that Mega-City One wasn't a good place to live.

Why BSG-worship: because it is really, really good. Someone loaned us the mini-series about two months ago; since then, we've been going a bit mad, and have chewed through three seasons so far. It's the West Wing in space; the writing, characters and situations are that good. The sci-fi element means that the writers can take some things that you would never, never be able to broadcast if you put them in a contemporary setting, but as soon as you slap in some shiny robots then it's OK. I don't think, for example, that you could have a drama set in the Real World (tm) that even played with the idea that suicide bombing might be a legitimate tactic against an overwhelmingly powerful invader. Plus, as has been mentioned, hotties.

Seriously, it's incredibly good. If you don't like sci-fi, just give it a quick try and see if you can get past the robots and spaceships.

Whilst cycleways seem righteous, it does seem to me that they'd be more used if they were actually within population centers, rather than between them

I think we need to consider why we're building a cycleway. Is it a sustainable transport thing? Or a tourism thing? Clue: which minister greenlit the project? So the ostensible purpose is to get those tourist dollars (and it's not a bad idea, at that), rather than to actually help incorporate cycling as part of the default set of transport options. Which is a pity: I'm well behind the idea of the cycleway (though I'm worried about how well it'll be done), but I'm concerned that it'll suck funding out of local councils' budgets for encouraging day-to-day cycling.

  • Busytown: No news is good news,

    Want a biscuit?

    Depends. What sort of biscuit?

We used to have a dog that begged for apple cores. And beer. He was a good dog.

I should point out that I am not, as far as I know, a dog. But then - that's just what I'd say if I was, isn't it?

I notice no actual dogs have contributed to this thread.

    How do you know?

    Bang away.

Am I the only one slightly surprised that this line wasn't in a thread from one of Emma's posts?

  • Island Life: The Prime Minister will see…,

Getting fleets of ready-mix trucks up the top of the Rimutakas, never mind barrowing the grey sludge through the undergrowth to the boxing is a pricey undertaking.

Yeah. That's just kinda showing that the Herald doesn't know what it's talking about. If you're in, say, Featherston, and want to cycle to the Beehive, you've got a perfectly good existing cyclepath pretty much all the way. The route through the Rimutakas is already covered by the Rimutaka Rail Trail (on the route of the old Rimutaka Incline); you'll need a bike with fairly wide tyres and some decent lights for the tunnels. From there, you can ride along the Hutt River Trail to Petone, then the cyclepath along SH2.

Plus: concrete? Who wants to cycle on concrete? Tarmac's much nicer, and safer in the wet.

  • Hard News: Not Helping,

Personally I prefer angels on horseback, but they're a bit pricier.

Never mind what cheese goes with what, can anyone help me in locating the two foods I really, really miss from the UK (I went a bit native during our OE): pork & stilton sausages, and decent haggis. Both available at most supermarkets I went to in the UK, neither of which I've seen here in the last three years. ??
