it’d be like a semi-pro NZ soccer team knocking Italy out of the football world cup finals in pool play or something.
That will never happen.

Hell, even John Roughan is in favour.
But when he talks about Charlie's in the last paragraph he appears to have missed the bit about Labour proposing to extend the tax to the sale of shares and businesses.

So you think that the key to Australia’s current economic success is it’s progressive tax system? Screw mineral wealth, those top tax rates will sort things out.
You know, they had mineral wealth and we hadn't twenty years ago as well, and the gap between the two countries has ballooned in that time. So maybe it's not the minerals. (Even Brash says it's not the minerals.)

We were all lined up at the leaving gates, we were, weeping and wailing and begging them to stay.
Yes, I remember I had brought a crate of tomatoes. You know, for comfort.
They instead seem to think we are going to catch up with Australia by doing the opposite of Australia which seems strange logic to me.
They think that our key resource is neoliberalism, and not being so attached to the idea of the welfare state. Seriously, read the 2025 taskforce report.

It would be nice if the rest of us could simply take these events on their merits. It’s going to be quite a couple of months.
Hey - I'm going to the christchurch arts festival, and I probably won't be seeing any games lives, so, yeah, but I think it's still early to tell how it will go. I remember Italy 90 - we were showcasing a lot of things back then too. It was fucking awful. Not saying it will be the same, but it's just too early to tell. You've got this image of arcadia which I think is nice, others are grumpy and they're entitled to it, let's see how it goes.

Er, it has:
We’ll see how it goes, it’s all I’m saying. I suspect a medium will be struck between the tourists queuing to view a Colin McCahon retrospective or punching each other and throwing up on my shoes.

I'm more thinking of the people who have convinced themselves that the country will somehow be hell on earth for a couple of months. It won't.
Of course it won't. On the other hand you seem to have a vision of a wonderful multicultural festival full of art and lore which I suspect won't eventuate either.

Grrrr. Rugby has cost the public of Dunedin (and the wider Otago) over $200,000,000.00 recently in benefit of a bankrupt professional sports team in action. It was bad when they were costing us a million a year in "forgiven debts", and more to the Otago and Southland teams. A thousand dollars a head, including the kids.
Oh, quit your whingeing! Just enjoy the party we're having at your expense.
Spoilsport.

I'd settle for everyone holding back on whingeing about it till it starts and there's something to whinge about.
There's plenty to whinge about in advance of it, actually, I would have thought.

He also voted for homosexual law reform and supports medical marijuana… should I change my views on that too?
As Ernesto Rossi once said, if a fascist says that it's raining and it is actually raining, then the fascist is right.
But hey, look, knock yourself out, agreeing with Roger Douglas wise. You'd be a lot more above board than the bulk of New Zealand liberals, who always bang on about how evil Roger Douglas and Ruth Richardson were, but god forbid they should ever suggest, much less advocate, reversing their policies. Apparently because they were "a necessary pain". Just not for them.
