Many thanks to all the public address writers and commenters - so full of great information. You've made me re-embrace twitter and made my working output far less.

Thanks Russell for the friendly home-turf, and everyone who raised a voice.
I've also been wanting to say it's time we dialled back abuse of journalists and the MSM. I'm maybe biased because I know a few. Some are right, some are left; some are loud and obnoxious, others thoughtful and measured.
But 2 minutes on kiwiblog and you'll read almost exactly the same accusations against journalists many here use; just there it's 'common-knowledge' the media are a bunch of commo-Labour-lovers-at-best.
There are stand-out dorks, sure - and it's fair game to hate on TV presenters for whatever reason (sorry Russell!) :) We all need to watch the watchdogs, and pull them up when they misrepresent or make mistakes.
But the general accusation of systemic bias from both sides is more an indication of how rancorous and divided our politics are than fair analysis of the media.
And crrraaaazzzzzy election. But also revealing, of things we needed to know, and have to keep talking about.
Now, must pop out and vote! -

The EC has not covered itself in glory in this election campaign.
Opened themselves up to very serious questions. Bias isn't impossible and can't be ruled out: it needs to be considered.
But without that, the stupid rulings on what constitutes political advertising need to be challenged. We need a much clearer sense of where free speech ends and advertising starts. Also what 'associated/unassociated groups' can and can't do. (We don't want the sort of idiotic legislation that spawns endless PACs as per the US; we don't want artists and bloggers and single issue groups unable to express political opinions.) -

For sure. The ideal would be parents and children having choice - much more choice than currently, with quality specialist services available to support whichever choice we made. It's not impossible.

Thanks Gio - great summary. I'd love to see the Greens get the portfolio - and I reackon if they're in govt, there's a good chance (it's definitely not on the sexy-portfolios-for-the-ambitious list).
I've also found myself impressed by Tracey Martin - a waste, as I'm just not ever likely to vore NZ First.
As parent of a son in a special school, I'm only half-way on inclusion. It's a nice ideal, but it's sure not there yet, and I'm not convinced mainstreaming willl ever be the best for all children. -

Beaut summary of a bloody mess, Eric. I don’t agree with you on many things economic, but you’ve nailed a lot of the elements here.
I think CCC have woken up somewhat under Lianne Dalziel, but not enough. CERA have been a major disappointment. Brownlee – I dunno what he’s been doing. And I should, I live here and take an interest.
We have broken politics to deal with, as well as roads and buildings. It’s bloody frustrating. -

So*, perhaps that rule of thumb isn’t as good as you hope.
“So” is the current “well” or “um”. (I edit a lot of interviews and talks, and it drives me a little nuts, so I chop it off as often as I’m able.)
But this accords well enough with the piece linked to in the sense it’s often an ‘I’ve rehearsed this’ or ‘here’s the public version’ marker.
